In my opinion as a movie critic, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” takes the titular hero on an intense, gripping journey. At the film’s outset, Batman is chasing a serial killer who seems to be taunting him, creating unease among the Gotham City Police Department since they don’t trust vigilantes. Working side by side with Jim Gordon, Batman delves deeper into this mystery, shedding light on his involvement in the plot. Over time, he manages to outsmart the Riddler and prevent him from assassinating the mayor-elect. Yet, as one enemy falls, more rise to take their place. The Penguin rises to power within Gotham’s criminal underworld, while the Joker plots from Arkham Asylum, seeking to bring down the Dark Knight with the help of the Riddler.
In the finale of The Batman, hints suggest that both the Joker and Oz Cobb might cause trouble for the Caped Crusader in the future. However, there could be other complications to address. The Riddler unveiled a portion of Gotham’s corruption, but it’s possible he merely scratched the surface. In Christopher Nolan’s Gotham, another group of villains may be manipulating events, and they have a deep-rooted connection with the Wayne family.
The Court of Owls Has Always Been Part of Batman’s Life
In the vast DC Comics universe, Gotham City has undergone significant changes over time. One notable transformation occurred in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman Vol 2 #2, where the emergence of the Court of Owls took place. This secret society, composed of influential families, has been covertly controlling Gotham for centuries, manipulating events to favor their own interests. The great-great-grandfather of Bruce Wayne, named Alan Wayne, uncovers the existence of this secret society but is silenced by the Court’s assassins, known as Talons, before he can reveal the truth. As time passes, Bruce suspects that the Court of Owls played a role in his parents’ death, though he lacks concrete evidence. The Court of Owls thus becomes a potential future adversary for Batman, who focuses on ridding Gotham’s streets of crime and corruption.
It’s Bruce, not Batman, who draws the attention of the organization when he reveals his plans for rebuilding the city. William Cobb, the main Talon, then targets the billionaire, but finds himself in over his head when the Bat-Family becomes involved. After Batman humiliates the Court of Owls’ top assassin, they retaliate by unleashing all the Talons on Gotham, forcing Batman to take more decisive action. Although Robert Pattinson’s Batman isn’t quite ready for a one-on-one confrontation with the entire Court of Owls at present, whispers about “The Batman Part II” suggest that there may come a moment when it’s fitting to introduce this organization into the movie scene.
The Batman Trilogy Has a Place for the Court of Owls
James Gunn cautioned fans not to blindly believe all rumors, but he didn’t explicitly deny the speculation about Robin appearing in “The Batman Part II.” If Dick Grayson or a different iteration of the character is set to appear, the sequel could offer an ideal platform for them to refine their skills as they engage in battles alongside the Dark Knight against whatever villain Reeves pairs them with. Along this journey, the Dynamic Duo might uncover additional information about the true influence in Gotham City. Reeves could choose to emulate the comics by having Dick join the Court of Owls as a covert agent. The organization recognizes potential in the ex-acrobat, and such a storyline seems fitting for Reeves’ approach.
In the final scene of “The Batman Part II”, we might uncover the Court of Owls’ presence and hint at their intrigue towards Batman’s sidekick. However, in the third film, Batman will undoubtedly be several moves ahead of them, a fact they won’t realize until it’s too late. The residents of Gotham will eventually discover who has been causing their troubles for years, and the Bat-Family will gain more recognition, making it clear to the villains that they should not underestimate them in future encounters.
The Batman Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
