In the primary universe, The Flash is among the most potent heroes, hailing from any era. The Speed Force, an extraordinarily powerful energy reservoir, enables the Flash to accomplish whatever is necessary to move as swiftly as required, breaking all limitations on what’s feasible. In DC’s Absolute Universe, where heroes are portrayed as underdogs, certain key elements were stripped from each character introduced. For instance, Batman was deprived of his wealth, Wonder Woman lost Paradise Island, and the Flash was separated from the Speed Force. The Flash’s abilities in the Absolute Universe function distinctly compared to their original counterparts, yet they might be stronger than ever. In “Absolute Flash” #5, a significant alteration to Wally West’s powerset unfolded, potentially making him the most powerful Flash of all time.
Wally and Grodd on the Run
Following an accidental acquisition of Barry Allen’s powers through a potentially lethal test, Wally decided to leave. The covert operation known as Project Olympus dispatched their top operatives, the Rogues, to apprehend him. However, when he proved too formidable, they resorted to using their psychic gorilla, Grodd. To the detriment of the evidently malicious group, Grodd and Wally joined forces and departed on their own. In issue #4, this unconventional pair found refuge in Central City, where it was disclosed that Dr. Elenore Thawne was spearheading Project Olympus’s endeavor to create metahumans. Four of these metahumans escaped when Wally fled, an incident which the young Flash and his charming sidekick witnessed when Grodd guided him to Heatwave, claiming they needed to assist him.
Initially, Wally showed no interest in this situation and attempted to escape, as an eerie resemblance of his bond with Heatwave emerged when it was believed Barry had perished. Frightened, Wally was reassured by Grodd that he was safe and the only one capable of controlling the rampaging Heatwave. For the first time, the Flash donned his suit and jumped into action, aiming to halt the uncontrollable human experiment. Despite striking him repeatedly, his efforts proved futile against the lava-like entity. Grodd then advised Wally that he didn’t need to stop him but help him and absorb the heat instead. Bolts of electricity surged from Wally’s fingers, followed by a barrage of energy blasts from Heatwave in response. In a strange vision, Wally found himself in another world, one with an awe-inspiring cosmos nearby. A voice echoed, and a gigantic spectral hand emerged from the stars to reach out to him; however, Wally fled back to reality. The transformation of Heatwave was somehow reversed by Wally, absorbing the energy that had caused it. As Project Olympus military arrived, the adorable superhero squad departed. This recent modification to Wally’s powers carries significant and far-reaching consequences.
Absolute Flash is Project Olympus’s Miracle
Eobard Thawne is fixated on apprehending Wally West, claiming that he represents the pinnacle of Barry Allen’s research and something they can never replicate again. The specifics of their project remain unclear, but it appears that Project Olympus is creating metahumans by tapping into a mysterious energy source. However, every individual before Wally underwent gruesome mutations. Interestingly, Wally seems to be the only one who retained his humanity, although his powers cause him immense discomfort and visions of two possible futures. In one scenario, he becomes the Flash, a hero; in the other, he transforms into a monster like the other test subjects. This energy source that Barry Allen was attempting to control turns people into monsters, and Wally has become a vessel for it, allowing him to draw it from others who have been affected. Additionally, there’s an entity that attempted to contact Wally, which could be Barry Allen himself or someone else entirely. It might be the manifestation of this energy, a previous test subject like the Absolute version of Jay Garrick, or simply a different individual altogether.
It’s clear that Wally’s new abilities aren’t connected to the Speed Force as we know it; they seem to be an entirely unique version or perhaps stem from an alien energy source or technology hidden within Project Olympus. The final pages of this issue reveal an alien spaceship buried in Project Olympus, with strange beings preserved in test tubes. So, Wally’s powers might originate from some kind of extraterrestrial energy field or sophisticated machinery. This version of Wally is quite distinct, as he can absorb the powers of those affected by this energy and potentially exhibit them himself. He’s already demonstrated the ability to run at incredible speeds, perceive time differently, and even assimilate more of this energy. Whatever unfolds ahead, I think we’re all eager and excited to see what Wally is truly capable of.
