The fatal flaw that plagues all Kryptonians has long been Kryptonite. It manifests in a variety of colors and forms, some poisonous like the iconic green, while others, such as gold, rob them of their powers permanently. Yet it’s the ominous Black Kryptonite that poses the greatest threat. Unlike other types, this dark stone doesn’t physically hurt Superman or other Kryptonians, but rather it awakens the darkness within them. It transforms them into destructive forces capable of tearing apart everything they hold dear, and stopping them is an incredibly challenging task due to their murderous nature. In the 2025 comic series, Supergirl (#3), this lethal Kryptonite reappears more dangerous than ever, causing Supergirl’s entire being to transform into the malevolent character known as Satan Girl.
What Is Black Kryptonite?
Similar to other lethal substances hailing from Krypton, Black Kryptonite came into existence following the cataclysmic explosion of Krypton. It first surfaced on the TV series “Smallville” in the episode titled “Crusade,” and later debuted in the 2005 issue #2 of “Supergirl.” These initial appearances portrayed it as splitting an individual into two distinct entities, one good and one evil. However, subsequent uses have instead demonstrated its ability to manipulate the mind of those it affects, causing a reversal of their morality and transforming them into ruthless killers. The character “The Batman Who Laughs” #1 introduced Black Kryptonite in a different universe, where it was employed by a malevolent version of Batman to persuade Superman and Superboy to murder their families before it eventually killed them. Over time, Black Kryptonite disappeared from the main DC Universe. Now, it’s back with an even more destructive impact.
Rise of Satan Girl and Krypto the Satan Dog
In a twist of events, Supergirl finds herself confronting an imposter claiming to be the true Supergirl in her hometown of Midvale. The townsfolk believe Lesla-Lar, a Kryptonian from Kandor’s Bottle City, is the genuine Supergirl, while they view Kara as an imposter. Lesla has manipulated the Danvers family into thinking she is their daughter rather than Kara, and Lena Luthor remains Kara’s only ally. Despite being labeled a fraud by the townsfolk, Kara presses on with her heroic deeds, helping Midvale residents and winning them over, even if they suspect she aims to capitalize on Supergirl’s fame.
Lesla-Lar is puzzled by the swift turn against her by the townsfolk. Infatuated with Supergirl and envious of the attention she garners, Lesla fails to grasp that people appreciate her because she’s a selfless hero. Desiring for the town to despise Supergirl as much as herself, Lesla reveals Supergirl’s identity to Black Kryptonite. As a result, Supergirl and Krypto are altered into amoral villains, with Kara adopting the moniker Satan Girl.
In a different phrasing: Satan Girl, accompanied by her wicked canine, causes chaos throughout Midvale. She humiliates an entire street, defaces Midvale High, and even ruins a child’s birthday celebration. Meanwhile, Krypto inadvertently destroys someone’s car using his scorching urine, a terrible way to lose a vehicle. Lesla-lar anticipates the town’s admiration after revealing Supergirl’s darkness, but they instead turn against her for seeking attention. Lesla is taken aback and utterly astonished when Satan Girl begins wreaking havoc in the Danvers. Seeing kind individuals being harmed, Lesla attempts to halt the misbehaving girl, but Supergirl is beyond control. To make matters worse, her health declines due to exposure to Black Kryptonite, transforming their predicament from challenging to rapidly disintegrating Supergirl-like issues. Fortunately, this coincides with the arrival of Supergirl’s new companion, Lena Luthor, and Streaky the Super-Cat. Lena employs Titano’s miniaturized Kryptonite eye-beams to purify Satan Girl, restoring her and Krypto to their normal selves.
In this revised version, Kara Danvers (Supergirl) turns to Lesla-Lar once more, the antagonist who harbors resentment but is willing to take whatever punishment Supergirl delivers. However, instead of retaliation, Supergirl embraces her and communicates a desire for change. She empathizes with Lesla’s loneliness that led to these actions and wishes to assist. But alas, as they share this touching moment, a portal materializes, revealing Lesla-Lar’s parents from the Kandorian Science Council. They accuse Lesla of breaching Kandorian law by coming to Earth and causing chaos, with Supergirl being held responsible for her influence over Lesla. The council members decree that both girls will be returned to Kandor immediately for judgment.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that Supergirl seems to be facing some tough times, but fortunately, she managed to survive this confrontation with Black Kryptonite. However, due to the events in Superman Unlimited, Kryptonite has become far more prevalent, which means we’re likely to see a lot more of this lethal mineral in the future. Frankly, it’s not the kind of Kryptonite I’d ever want to cross paths with, and the entire Super Family will need to stay vigilant to avoid it.
