Following the release of ‘Ready or Not 2’, ‘They Will Kill You‘ delivers another action-packed, violent experience. The film stars Zazie Beetz, who shines in a role that suggests she could become a leading action star. She plays Asia Reaves, and the story unfolds with chapter breaks displaying her name. The plot centers around Asia’s attempt to escape her abusive father with her sister ten years prior, which ultimately led to her imprisonment.
Freshly out of confinement, Asia seeks employment and finds a job advertised at The Vigil, a stunning building in Manhattan. However, she soon notices disturbing Satanic symbols in the building’s design, foreshadowing the horrors within – it’s a bit like a darker, New York take on Meghan and Harry’s home. She’s interviewed by the manager, Lilith (Patricia Arquette), and once inside, the doors lock behind her. After a brief introduction to some of the other residents, including Tom Felton and Heather Graham (who it’s great to see back in movies), Asia is shown to her room. That’s where the film really kicks off, with an impressive fight scene where Asia takes on and brutally defeats four strange, pig-faced attackers, establishing the film’s violent and gory tone.
Though the four seemed defeated, they quickly came back to life – they’d made a deal with the Devil, or whatever name you give him, granting them immortality. Now, Asia must continue her quest to rescue her sister, Maria (also known as Myah’la).
Kirill Sokolov directed and co-wrote this film, which draws heavily from the over-the-top gore of Evil Dead 2. You can also see influences from Tarantino and the action of Gareth Evans’ The Raid, plus it often uses comic book-style framing. It’s frequently both funny and creatively gruesome – one scene with a rogue eyeball feels particularly inspired by Sam Raimi – but the action, while wild and energetic, doesn’t quite reach the peak of the film’s earlier set piece in the Asia’s room.
The film ‘They Will Kill You All’ is intensely violent and graphic, though it has moments of genuine brilliance. The excessive gore can become somewhat predictable, but it should establish both the actress Beetz and director Sokolov as talents in the action-horror genre.
