Though it wasn’t a blockbuster hit this spring, Mortal Kombat II is a genuinely fun movie. Picking up after the 2021 film, it brought back beloved characters, introduced new ones, and thrilled fans with its action-filled story of martial arts star Johnny Cage being chosen to compete in a high-stakes, interdimensional tournament. A third Mortal Kombat movie was already being discussed before Mortal Kombat II even came out, and an official announcement feels inevitable. While we eagerly await the next installment, if you’re craving more martial arts action, there’s a fantastic series that’s perfect to watch in the meantime.
While it only ran for three seasons, Warrior is one of the best martial arts television series to ever air and it is a perfect watch while we wait for Mortal Kombat 3. The series is based on an original concept and treatment by the legendary Bruce Lee and is set in late 1870s San Francisco during the Tong Wars, following martial arts prodigy Ah Sahm who has come from China to find his sister but ends up pulled into the conflict. It’s run may have been brief, but the series not only tells a great story, but has Game of Thrones-level intrigue and plenty of incredible action, too.
Warrior Has Incredible Fight Scenes (But the Characters are Just as Great)
One of the things that makes Warrior so compelling is its incredible fight choreography. Unlike many martial arts shows that rely on flashy camera work, Warrior lets the actors’ skills and the intensity of the fights speak for themselves, whether it’s a brutal brawl or a more fluid, elegant sequence. This realistic approach adds a gritty edge to the already exciting action and also helps to tell the story in a fresh and unique way.
Beyond its stunning fight choreography, Warrior tells a compelling story rooted in a significant but often forgotten period of American history: the Tong Wars of San Francisco. The show expertly uses this backdrop to explore the political and racial tensions of the time. Over its three seasons, Warrior features complex shifting alliances and avoids simple portrayals of good versus evil. The characters are nuanced, with both sympathetic qualities and flaws, making the narrative as gripping as the incredible martial arts action.
With compelling characters and exciting action, Warrior is a fantastic show to watch while we anticipate Mortal Kombat 3. Plus, there’s a cool connection: Joe Taslim, who plays Sub-Zero, also stars in Warrior as Li Yong. It’s a fun link between the two franchises! Even if you only start watching Warrior to see Taslim, you’ll quickly become invested in the entire series – you won’t regret it.
