Starting March 1st, fans in the United States can now stream The Powerpuff Girls for free on Tubi, along with other beloved classic Cartoon Network shows. The launch includes some special episodes, and most excitingly, it features “See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey” – an episode that was banned from Cartoon Network and rarely shown on television due to controversial imagery.
Why Was This Powerpuff Girls Episode Banned?
“See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey” is a unique episode from the fifth season of The Powerpuff Girls. It’s structured as a complete rock opera, starting with the Powerpuff Girls losing a fight to a team of villains. Exhausted, they desperately wish for a rest, and a strange Gnome offers them a deal: world peace in exchange for their superpowers. They agree, and the world becomes a perfect utopia, but the Gnome gains immense power in the process.
The episode wasn’t banned in the United States because of its story or even its unusual, visually dynamic style – it was a rock opera with fantastical imagery. The problem stemmed from details in the background artwork. Some viewers claimed that the way metal beams were drawn in ruined buildings resembled crucifixes, and a background character was interpreted as looking like Jesus, leading to the episode being pulled from broadcast.
The Powerpuff Girls Now Streaming a Complete Series
This Powerpuff Girls episode has had an unusual history regarding its availability. While it was banned from broadcast in the United States, it did air in other countries. It wasn’t shown in the US again until the complete series was released on DVD, and it wasn’t initially available on HBO Max when the streaming service launched. However, fans could purchase it digitally.
