While some of the comedic moments surrounding Sanji can be overdone, especially in the anime, he remains a fan favorite. As the crew’s chef and a powerful fighter, Sanji consistently proves his worth, and he even gained the ability to use Haki during the time skip. Despite how he’s sometimes depicted in the anime, the series creator, Eiichiro Oda, consistently gives Sanji important roles and showcases his strengths.

One Piece is famous for giving its characters interesting backstories, but Sanji’s is arguably the most well-developed. Many fans consider him the best-written character in the series, though that’s always a matter of opinion. Still, dedicating the entire Whole Cake Island arc to his story not only deepened his character, but also provided a satisfying resolution to his personal struggles.

One Piece’s Whole Cake Island Arc Helps Sanji Break Free From His Past Shackles

The Whole Cake Island arc uncovers another heartbreaking part of Sanji’s past, explaining how he wound up in the East Blue as a child and met Zeff, the man who became his mentor and father figure. Considered a disappointment for his lack of strength, Sanji suffered terrible abuse from his family. With help from his sister Reiju, he managed to escape after being imprisoned by his father, traveling all the way from North Blue to East Blue. Even after escaping his awful family, Sanji faced many hardships before finally finding stability with Zeff.

Wow, things really hit the fan when we left Zou and arrived at Whole Cake Island! Sanji was forced to deal with some seriously painful stuff from his past, especially when he came face-to-face with his awful father and brothers. Turns out, they only wanted him to marry one of Big Mom’s daughters as some kind of twisted alliance offer – they were willing to sacrifice him! He felt like he had no choice but to go along with it to protect us, his crew. But honestly, I was blown away when Luffy and the others showed up, risking everything to challenge one of the Four Emperors just to bring him home. It was incredible!

The battle against Big Mom Pirates was incredibly challenging, but Sanji and his crew managed to succeed through their strong will and cooperation. By the arc’s end, Sanji’s family, who were being held captive by Big Mom, were completely trapped. Despite everything he’d been through, Sanji rescued them, staying true to his values and the lessons he learned from Zeff. This not only allowed him to break free from his family’s influence but also finally gave him peace of mind.

Sanji’s Kindness Has a Heartbreaking Reason Behind It

Sanji is known for his genuine kindness, which he shows to everyone he meets, even his opponents. Luffy first noticed this when Sanji showed compassion to an enemy named Gin, and it was a key reason he wanted Sanji to join his crew. Throughout the series, Sanji consistently prioritizes others, and the Whole Cake Island arc demonstrates that this selflessness runs even deeper than we realized.

Sanji’s compassion isn’t just a natural trait or something he inherited from his mother; it’s often rooted in his low self-esteem. Years of mistreatment led him to believe he shouldn’t prioritize his own needs and that he was easily replaceable. This explains why he immediately resigned himself to leaving the Straw Hats, and why he didn’t think they would come after him, even though he knew how much they cared.

Throughout his journey with the crew, Zoro deeply empathized with Nami’s suffering under Arlong’s control. He consistently offered comfort to those around him, famously calling Luffy a monster on Drum Island to help Chopper see their shared humanity. Despite his compassion for others, Zoro dismisses his own pain, which is why he keeps his past a secret. This also explains why he struggles to accept help, even pushing Luffy away when offered, despite always being there for others.

Sanji Reaching Out to Robin in Wano Country Saga Proves His Character Growth

Sanji consistently prioritizes the needs of others over his own, which explains why he struggles to accept help when it’s offered. This tendency was clear when he harshly rejected Luffy’s attempt to save him. Despite everything that happened during and after the Whole Cake Island arc, Sanji remains fundamentally the same person. If there’s been any change, it’s that he’s become more willing to lean on his friends and accept their support.

Sanji has always been incredibly protective of women, to the point where he’d rather be defeated than harm one, even if she’s an opponent. We saw this during the Enies Lobby arc when Kalifa attacked him – he refused to fight back, putting himself in a difficult situation. While Nami ended up helping him, he didn’t ask for her assistance.

Sanji’s behavior in Wano was a welcome change, especially after being captured by Black Maria. Realizing he couldn’t fight her, he smartly avoided taking a beating and instead called out for Robin’s help. Robin was thrilled to assist him. His development is far from over, and we can expect to see him continue to grow as a character alongside the rest of the crew for a long time.
