John Constantine is a beloved magical character in the DC universe, and it’s easy to see why. Unlike many heroes with incredible powers, Constantine relies on his intelligence, charm, and clever illusions. He is skilled in magic, and you wouldn’t want to cross him, but he’s not nearly as powerful as someone like Zatanna, who uses raw magical ability. Constantine prefers to outsmart people and isn’t above making deals with demons to get what he wants – and that willingness to be cunning is a big part of what makes him so interesting.
It’s incredibly satisfying to watch a clever, resourceful character like Constantine wriggle out of tough situations. He provides a fascinating look into the darker, magical side of the DC universe. While powerful, he’s often outmatched and relies on his intelligence and expertise to survive, which makes him a compelling character. Though Constantine is excellent, it’s exciting to see new faces, and Xanthe Zhou is a perfect fit to take on the mantle as DC’s next Constantine – they have all the qualities needed to succeed.
Foot in Two Different Worlds

Xanthe Zhou grew up in Gotham City’s Chinatown. One rainy night, a speeding truck struck and killed them. Because of the stormy weather, the boundary between the world of the living and the Spirit World was thin, and Xanthe’s spirit was pulled over to the other side. There, they were found by Po Po, a powerful spirit and sorcerer who served the Jade Court – eight godlike beings who rule the Spirit World. Feeling compassion for the child, Po Po gave up most of her power, hoping to bring Xanthe back to life. While this act cost Po Po her strength and memories, it only partially worked, leaving Xanthe in a strange state – neither fully alive nor fully dead.
Xanthe exists between the worlds of the living and the spirits, unable to go back to their old life. Now a spirit envoy, they deliver offerings to forgotten spirits and maintain balance between both realms. Despite their youth, Xanthe is the leading human authority on the Spirit World, selling magical charms online – even Constantine is a customer.
Over time, they’ve become incredibly skilled, essentially a powerful magician who can move easily between the human world and the spirit realm. Their main weapon is special paper they fold into anything imaginable – stairs, swords, you name it. If that’s not enough, they use enchanted rings to ignite their attacks. A talented fighter and a true expert in the occult, they have everything it takes to become a legendary character.
Half Dead, Half Alive, All Interesting

Xanthe would be a great lead character for a comic similar to Constantine. Like Constantine, they’re a clever magician who wins fights using their knowledge and skill, rather than just brute force. Xanthe is the go-to expert on a rare and interesting type of magic within the DC universe, and has a distinctive style to match. They share Constantine’s cool, detached yet caring personality and practical nature, but are much more hopeful. While Constantine battled darkness with cynicism, Xanthe approaches it with optimism and a realistic understanding of the world.
This character, who identifies as non-binary, offers a unique and fresh perspective. Their story is incredibly compelling – they’ve continued to age despite being legally deceased, and struggle to rejoin normal life. The implications of being ‘half alive’ alone could drive years of character development. Add to that the exciting possibilities of blending Chinese mythology with the superhero genre, and you have a character with virtually limitless potential. Xanthe deserves a deeper exploration of their story.
