Many horror game fans don’t limit their spooky fun to just Halloween. Even when it’s cold outside and the holidays are here, some of us still crave a good scare. If that sounds like you, you might enjoy Trigger Happy Interactive’s new game, Total Chaos, which is now available on Xbox.
I didn’t realize how dedicated the fanbase for Total Chaos was when I first started playing. I just knew it was a scary survival horror game that had just come out on Xbox. I cautiously began, jumpy at every strange noise in my headphones. A mysterious radio message drew me forward as I steered my boat through a worsening storm, which eventually ended with me shipwrecked on a strange island.
As my character reached the shore, a heavy sense of dread settled in. Every sound – the waves, the gate, the wind – built a truly disturbing atmosphere, something Total Chaos does exceptionally well. Exploring the island of Fort Oasis fills you with a deeply unsettling feeling that lingers with every step.
Total Chaos uses a grainy, old-style visual look and unsettling sounds to create a truly creepy atmosphere. Exploring the island feels dangerous at every turn – whether you’re near the crashing waves on the beach or venturing into dark, anomaly-filled caves, everything is designed to make you feel uneasy. This isn’t a relaxing island getaway; you’ll encounter terrifying creatures and horrors lurking around every corner.

As a researcher studying Total Chaos, I’ve found that the core gameplay really revolves around fighting and carefully managing your resources. What’s particularly interesting is the old-school inventory system. It forces you to make tough choices about what to carry. For example, a syringe can give you a quick health boost, but it also causes bleeding, meaning you might *also* need to pack bandages. That adds up, and you have to decide if it’s worth the extra space when you could be carrying other healing items instead.
Surviving isn’t just about avoiding monsters – you also need to manage hunger. Will you risk cooking and eating the strange meat you discovered? Is it worth taking damage from stale bread for a temporary boost, especially if it means escaping a dangerous enemy?
From Doom II mod to horror masterpiece

As an analyst, I’ve been following Total Chaos for a while now, and it’s incredible to see how far it’s come. While it’s now known as a truly terrifying psychological survival horror game, it actually started as a mod for the classic Doom II. The initial buzz around Total Chaos came from its innovative use of the Doom engine. The creator, Sam Prebble, didn’t just use it for typical run-and-gun action; he pushed its boundaries to build a genuinely atmospheric 3D horror experience, complete with the ability to look around freely – something Doom II didn’t offer with its sprite-based characters.
The development of Total Chaos was a long and unusual process, spanning over twenty years and involving constant changes and improvements. Throughout this time, the game steadily evolved. Meanwhile, Prebble established himself as a visual effects artist, contributing to films like Avatar and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and later taking on a leadership position at Trigger Happy Interactive.

Trigger Happy eventually teamed up with game publishers Apogee Entertainment, Atari, and Infogrames to revamp Fort Oasis. They completely rebuilt Total Chaos as a separate, full game and brought in Akira Yamaoka, the famous composer from Silent Hill, to create a haunting soundtrack that would enhance the game’s intense and unsettling atmosphere.
Total Chaos launched unexpectedly on November 20th for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC. You can play it on Xbox Cloud Gaming, and it’s been optimized for handheld devices that work with Xbox. Plus, it’s included with an Xbox Game Pass subscription on both consoles and PCs.
