Those who’ve followed the story for a while know that any character, even main ones like Sam and Dean Winchester, can face danger in the world of monster hunting. The brothers have suffered many losses in their battles against creatures of all kinds – monsters, demons, ghosts, gods, and even people. But despite these challenges, they’ve always managed to defeat their opponents when working together.
For thirteen seasons, Sam and Dean Winchester were in every single episode, no matter how difficult things became. But the start of Season 14, with the episode “Stranger in a Strange Land,” changed that. Following the dramatic events at the end of Season 13, Dean was possessed by the archangel Michael from another world, and the show had to navigate a storyline it hadn’t faced before.
Dean Winchester Isn’t in “Stranger in a Strange Land”
To stop a greater threat, Dean let the angel Michael take control of his body. They made a deal: Michael would leave once the task was completed, but Michael broke his promise. In a surprising turn of events, he kept Dean’s body for himself. Season 14 begins three weeks after this happened.
Okay, so this week’s episode was all about the frantic search for Michael. Sam and the crew are really pulling out all the stops trying to figure out where he’s gone and, more importantly, what his deal is with Dean. It’s a tense episode, and honestly, a little unsettling. The big kicker? This is the first time we’ve gone an entire episode without actually seeing Dean. Michael has completely taken over his body, and we’re left hanging, still unsure what his ultimate plan is. It’s a cliffhanger that definitely left me wanting more.
Wow, “Gods and Monsters” was intense! It was heartbreaking watching Dean struggle to get his body back, just seeing Michael’s face staring back at him. Then, Sam, Bobby, and even Mom had to fight off these seriously powerful creatures Michael sent after us. And the worst part? Dean just…showed up, totally confused, saying Michael was gone and he had no idea why! It was a really unsettling cliffhanger.
Viewers missed seeing the hunter for nearly two episodes. Dean remains largely unaware of many of Michael’s past experiences. The third episode reveals how Michael received a significant scar on Dean’s arm, and Michael ultimately returns to control Dean’s body before the season ends.
Jensen Ackles Enjoyed Playing a New Character in Supernatural
Jensen Ackles is in this episode, but he’s playing a brand new character. You’ll see him wearing a newsboy cap and period clothing. He’s direct and speaks with a unique, almost musical, tone.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jensen Ackles discussed how he approached playing his new character. He initially tried to portray a typical, serious angel – an all-knowing being without a sense of humor. However, after rereading the material, he quickly decided to go in a completely different direction.
Richard Speight Jr., a fellow actor known for playing an archangel, directed the second episode and transformed into the character Michael for the role. While Jensen Ackles didn’t have much screen time in the first episode, his character, Michael, takes center stage in “Gods and Monsters,” where he portrays a particularly cruel and disturbing figure while tormenting a group of captive vampires.
Ackles explained that his character wasn’t originally written with much humor, so he added it subtly through his performance. He noticed that other angels, like Lucifer and Gabriel, had been portrayed with comedic elements, and since they were powerful archangels, he felt comfortable incorporating a bit of that same lightheartedness into his own portrayal.
