This Fantasy Book Masterpiece Can Finally Get the Movie or TV Show It Needs, With Help From 1 Unexpected Update

While numerous beloved fantasy novels haven’t yet been adapted for film or television, that’s starting to change with a recent development. The popularity of shows and movies like Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter proves fantasy books can make fantastic on-screen entertainment. Despite this, many worthy stories remain unadapted, either stalled in production or never chosen for development.

Many highly-rated fantasy novels from 2025, as well as older favorites, haven’t yet been adapted for film or television. Popularity isn’t always enough to get a book made into a movie or show, and that’s especially true for the works of Brandon Sanderson. He’s still actively working to bring projects like The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn to the screen. While previous attempts at adapting Mistborn seemed to restart in 2024, recent news suggests things are moving forward again, and a new development could significantly improve its chances.

A Mistborn Video Game Is Closer Than Ever to Actually Happening

Brandon Sanderson recently shared in his 2025 State of the Sanderson update that a video game based on his popular fantasy series, Mistborn, is a possibility. While still in the beginning phases, he’s optimistic about the project and is currently talking with game developers who seem to recognize the series’ potential and fanbase.

I’m starting to see genuine interest in developing a video game based on my work, and I think I’m at a point where we can actually make a Mistborn game. I’ve begun discussions with several major game development studios about the possibility.

This is just the first step, but it’s a positive one. The rights to this project were previously connected to film rights for about six or seven years, so I haven’t been able to gauge market interest until recently.

I’m taking a new approach to licensing the rights to turn my books into video games, hoping to stay involved in the process. Several large and respected gaming companies have already reached out, so if you’re a key decision-maker at a major studio – whether AAA or independent – and you’ve been interested in a Mistborn or Stormlight Archive game, please contact my representatives soon.

The recent news is thrilling, especially because the Mistborn books provide a fantastic foundation for a video game. The unique magic system based on metals and the constant action would translate incredibly well to a game format – it’s actually easier to envision as a game than a TV show or movie. However, fans shouldn’t lose hope for a screen adaptation altogether, as Brandon Sanderson recently shared that progress is being made on that front as well. In fact, a successful game could even boost those efforts and finally bring this series the adaptation it truly deserves.

How a Successful Mistborn Game Could Help the Series Get the Adaptation It Deserves

Developing a Mistborn video game could actually increase the chances of a TV show or movie being made, even if it temporarily shifts Brandon Sanderson’s focus. Hollywood is already recognizing the potential of his stories, and a successful game could prove that potential. The game’s performance could act as a trial run for a larger Mistborn adaptation, like a film or TV series. If the game is profitable, a film or show would likely be as well, attracting both gamers and existing fans of the books.

Recent successful video game adaptations are encouraging Hollywood to explore more projects based on games. Movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as TV shows like Fallout and The Last of Us, have proven popular with audiences. This makes it a smart move to develop another game adaptation, and many are hoping to see a Mistborn series come to life and succeed.

A Video Game Isn’t Mistborn’s Only Chance to Prove Its Screen Potential

As a huge fan of Mistborn, I’m really hoping we get a movie or show someday! A successful video game based on the series could definitely get Hollywood interested, but that’s not the only way. Brandon Sanderson is also working on the next phase of the story, Mistborn: Ghostbloods, and if those books do well, they could generate enough buzz and sales to convince a studio it’s worth investing in. Sanderson has said he’d have to pause writing to work on a film or TV adaptation, so maybe something will happen before Ghostbloods is finished. But if things stay stuck, more books might be exactly what we need to finally get a Mistborn adaptation off the ground!
