Turning books, movies, or comics into video games can go either way. Some games simply add familiar characters and settings to basic gameplay, resulting in a shallow experience loosely based on the original story. But when done well, gaming can really enhance an existing idea – like how Spider-Man’s swinging, which looks cool in comics and films, feels incredibly satisfying to do in a game.
As a gamer, I’m seriously hyped about the possibility of a Mistborn adaptation! The series is just packed with cool magic and interesting characters that would translate perfectly into a game. Plus, the world itself is so well-built, it would be amazing to explore. That’s why I got so excited when I heard Brandon Sanderson talking about it recently – though it sounds like any game is still very early in development, which is a little frustrating, but still promising!
Mistborn Might Be Getting The AAA Game Treatment

Although a Mistborn video game isn’t happening just yet, recent news from the series’ author is encouraging. Brandon Sanderson shared updates with fans in his latest “State of the Sanderson” blog post, and he hinted that development of a Mistborn game might be starting to take shape.
Brandon Sanderson recently shared that he’s seeing promising interest in developing a video game based on his Mistborn series. He’s begun initial talks with several large, well-known game developers, hoping to finally bring a Mistborn game to life while maintaining creative control. He’s actively seeking a partner and encourages representatives from major or independent AAA studios interested in developing a Mistborn or Stormlight Archive game to reach out to his agents now.
Over the past few years, there have been attempts to adapt Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn into a movie, which also complicated plans for a video game. Sanderson had previously tried to create a Mistborn game, but so far, it’s only resulted in a few items and a skin being added to Fortnite. The series has been more successful in the tabletop gaming world, with a role-playing game, a deck-building game, and a board game already available. While this isn’t a formal announcement of a Mistborn video game—and Sanderson is inviting developers of all sizes to pitch ideas—it’s exciting news for fans of the fantasy series.
Mistborn Is Pefect For Gaming

The Mistborn series began in 2006 with Mistborn: The Final Empire and is set in the world of Scadrial. The first three books follow Vin and a group of rebels with magical abilities as they fight to overthrow the Lord Ruler, an immortal and tyrannical king. Later books broadened the story’s scope and timeline. With its rich history and striking locations, the series offers a lot of potential for compelling video game environments and levels.
Because the Mistborn series covers a long period, a video game adaptation could be set during any specific era within that timeline, or even create a unique time period for the game. The magic system, which is based on different metals granting different powers, would be a fantastic feature for character customization. Players could create their own characters and unlock unique abilities based on the metals they use. A game based on the first three books, with its focus on overthrowing a tyrannical government, would play well like Assassin’s Creed, combining stealth, exploration, and action, all enhanced by magical abilities.
The vast world of Mistborn is perfect for a game that lets players explore using magical abilities – think of the fast-paced movement in a game like Marvel’s Spider-Man. This could be a fantastic way to introduce the series to new fans and offer a revitalized experience for those already familiar with it. If Brandon Sanderson is involved, the game could truly capture the spirit of the books, rather than feeling like a separate story. That’s why a Mistborn adaptation has been considered for so long, initially as a film. While a movie seems unlikely right now, a game set in this world could be even more appealing and offer a unique way to experience the story.
