Nintendo consoles aren’t always celebrated for their visually stunning games. Even popular series like Pokemon have received criticism from dedicated fans for glitchy graphics and an uncomfortable transition to the Switch 2, with the textures in recent titles seeming reminiscent of those found on the N64. However, despite this reputation for lower graphical quality, the new Nintendo system promises some visually stunning games, one of which has recently been positively reviewed by Digital Foundry.
In a recent Bluesky post, Digital Foundry shared a clip from their DF Weekly podcast where writer John Linneman praised the visual beauty of Final Fantasy VII Remake. He stated that the recently demonstrated Intergrade looked stunning on Switch 2 and he believed its graphics surpassed the PS4 version.

In episode 228 of DF Direct Weekly, Linneman boasted about aspects indicating reliability and aesthetics during a Gamescom demonstration. He proclaimed, “Without hesitation, I’ll say this is the most visually stunning thing on Switch 2.” He was impressed by the game running smoothly at 30fps, with impressive motion blur, commenting that it looked fantastic. The display remained stable and appeared equal to, if not surpassing, the PS4 version in his initial assessment.
The PlayStation 4 and the anticipated Switch 2 are frequently compared due to their hardware capabilities, despite the PS4 being an older console compared to the original Switch. In May, Digital Foundry had a sneak peek at a console showcase prior to the June launch of the Switch 2. During this event, they evaluated the visual performance of the Switch 2 and found it comparable to the PlayStation 4. A hypothetical scenario where the Switch 2 outperforms the PS4 in terms of graphics for Final Fantasy games would highlight its potential. However, the Digital Foundry writer warns that this could vary when considering the final version of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
According to Linneman’s estimation, the performance of Final Fantasy VII Remake on the Switch 2 seems to be somewhere around the level of both PS4 and PS5 versions, although he hasn’t had the opportunity to compare them directly. If this assessment holds true for the final game, it indicates a promising visual experience. While playing, he found the image quality to be exceptional, nearly matching the 1080p screen, which left him extremely satisfied with the overall result. In summary, Linneman’s initial impressions of the game’s performance on Switch 2 are quite positive.
Even though it seems like the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is progressing nicely, there hasn’t been any definitive announcement regarding its launch date this year. On August 27th, the official Final Fantasy VII social media account stated that Intergrade will be releasing “this winter,” but they didn’t provide a more precise timeline beyond that.
The enhanced version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, titled Intergrade, is set to debut this winter on the second iteration of the Nintendo Switch. It promises steady 30 frames per second for a seamless gaming experience and striking visual quality.

It seems that Square Enix, known for developing the “Final Fantasy VII Remake,” is switching up its strategy regarding game releases, compared to how they’ve done things in the past. In May, they indicated a desire to establish a closer relationship with Nintendo, hinting at a shift towards more collaboration rather than console exclusivity.
