As a movie fan, it really frustrates me when fantastic films don’t get the attention they deserve in theaters. There are so many examples of critically acclaimed movies that audiences actually liked, but just didn’t draw big crowds. Luckily, some of those films eventually find their fans through streaming or become cult classics, but others… they just fade away. And that’s a shame! There’s one monster movie in particular that I think is seriously underrated and deserves way more recognition. The best part? You can actually watch it for free right now!
You might not expect Anne Hathaway in a monster movie, but she actually starred in one! The 2016 film Colossal is a unique blend of sci-fi and comedy that includes a giant monster. Though it didn’t do well in theaters – earning only $4.5 million worldwide on a $15 million budget – critics loved it. Now, if you missed it, you can stream Colossal on Tubi.
Colossal Is a Unique Take on a Kaiju Movie (And May Be Hathaway’s Most Original Film)

In the film Colossal, Gloria (Anne Hathaway), a writer battling alcoholism, finds her life falling apart when her boyfriend ends their relationship and asks her to move out. She returns to her hometown in New Hampshire and reconnects with an old friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who offers her a job at a local bar – a job that unfortunately enables her drinking. Meanwhile, a massive monster begins attacking Seoul, South Korea, and Gloria gradually discovers a strange connection between herself and the creature, as well as a potentially sinister side to Oscar.
Though the idea behind Colossal is unusual, it’s a truly great movie, mainly because of the actors’ strong performances. Anne Hathaway is especially impressive as Gloria, a woman dealing with both the astonishing ability to control a giant monster and the damaging effects of her drinking. Jason Sudeikis also shines in what could be his best role yet, playing a seemingly kind man who actually represents a troubling aspect of Gloria’s own struggles.
Beyond the exciting monster action, the film explores deeper themes, making it truly special. Though it appears to be a typical kaiju movie, Colossal is really a thoughtful look at the main character, Gloria. The monster in the film is a physical representation of her struggles and failures, and the story uses this to examine addiction, recovery, and personal growth. Naturally, there’s also the expected monster-movie mayhem and destruction. It’s a quirky film, but surprisingly offers something for a wide range of viewers.
Released in 2017, the film Colossal might have flown under the radar in theaters, but it’s well worth watching now. It’s a unique and compelling movie that will appeal to both sci-fi and drama fans. If you enjoy giant monster action or thought-provoking stories about people, you’ll love this. With excellent performances, Colossal truly stands out – don’t miss it!
Colossal is streaming for free on Tubi.
