This gimbal-tracking webcam has TWO cameras and a great price — but it may not be “private” enough

An increasing number of individuals nowadays require high-quality webcams on their desks, with those offering intelligent framing being particularly sought after. However, have you ever thought about a webcam equipped with gimbal tracking and featuring not one, but two cameras?

It’s quite intriguing; the concept in question is impressively coming to life by EMEET at an exceptionally affordable price range. This webcam, priced at $160, offers a substantial amount of functionality, and EMEET’s software is packed with numerous features—even catering to configurations involving multiple cameras and microphones.

That sounds terrific, but I’m harboring some doubts regarding the software’s reliability and the stability of the camera’s firmware. Additionally, there seems to be a possible privacy concern that might deter some users straight off.

The EMEET PIXY isn’t a cheap webcam, but its price is reasonable given it’s a high-end, 4K model with AI-enhanced gimbal tracking – and this is all without mentioning its distinctive dual-camera setup.

EMEET PIXY review: What I like

It’s not unusual that the EMEET PIXEL doesn’t deviate significantly from the pinnacle of its category, which is the OBSBOT Tiny 2 webcam I previously reviewed, as there are limited innovative approaches when it comes to designing a gimbal-tracking webcam.

The design features a “squircle” base that houses all essential parts, topped with a component that controls the camera casing. This creates a sleek appearance, and EMEET has utilized high-quality materials and craftsmanship for an exceptional finish.

As a tech-savvy individual, I’m always on the lookout for devices that push boundaries and offer unique features. In this case, the PIXY stands out due to its innovative dual camera system. One camera supports the other by providing extra data, setting it apart from the usual single-camera setup.

The unique aspect of that camera housing lies in its dual cameras, which sets it apart from standard models. Interestingly, only one of these cameras is employed for taking images, while the other serves as an assistant, gathering extra data with AI to boost the performance of the main camera.

This device, the EMEET PIXY, works with just USB 2.0, making it versatile across various gadgets. While I can’t definitively say how well it performs, we’ll delve into that detail later on. Notably, it seems to have been primarily designed for Windows and macOS systems, as the EMEET STUDIO software is available only on these platforms.

To wrap things up, the removable bracket offers an ample degree of adaptability and performs admirably. It also features a common 1/4-inch screw thread, allowing effortless integration of the PIXY into your personalized configuration or attachment to a tripod.

I must admit, I’m quite amazed at how EMEET has masterfully tackled the essential hardware components. This, combined with the affordable pricing, is truly commendable. The gimbal tracking is impressively smooth and swift, offering a wide range of motion. Plus, it’s a thoughtful touch that they’ve included the option to manually disable the camera by pointing it downward.

When the PIXY is operational, you’ll typically find the image clarity to be excellent. Interestingly, the 4K sensor performs optimally when reduced to 1080p at 30 frames per second. This setting allows for digital zoom to ensure your subject remains in focus. Despite this, it consistently delivers high-quality detail preservation, accurate color representation, automatic adjustment of white balance and exposure levels, and swift autofocus capabilities.

The PIXY may not be the best, but it certainly delivers more than expected in terms of image quality, particularly in low-light conditions. EMEET asserts that the secondary camera significantly enhances autofocus and tracking speeds, and also boosts facial data image quality; I’m not entirely convinced by all the hype, but the PIXY does appear promising.

The EMEET PIXY boasts a triple-microphone system that outperforms many competing microphones, at least according to specifications on paper. In actual use, the PIXY’s microphones perform well. They may not be groundbreaking, but they effectively capture your voice and minimize unwanted background noise. Moreover, there are various recording modes to customize noise cancellation based on your surroundings.

Among PIXY’s key attractions, aside from its dual camera, lies its impressive software, boasting a wealth of features for users to enjoy.

Instead of merely serving as an application for managing the PIXY, the EMEET STUDIO aims to function as a centralized platform that links all aspects of your recording setup. It’s designed to accommodate multiple cameras and various audio sources, fostering seamless integration within your recording environment.

Beyond just image settings, filters, and different display options for the PIXY device, there’s also a sound mixer and an intelligent storyboarder powered by AI. These features are designed to offer guidance and inspiration on how best to utilize your equipment. While it may seem overwhelming, it’s evident that EMEET has put thought into offering more than just hardware alone.

At least right now, though, that software may also be the PIXY’s downfall…

EMEET PIXY review: What I don’t like

The EMEET STUDIO software offers numerous features, which can sometimes result in a disorganized interface with confusing navigation. Generally, it’s workable, but there are moments when it could be more intuitive. As for performance, it’s generally satisfactory, though occasional instability causes stutters, freezes, and even a few crashes during my testing phase.

As a devoted user, I must admit that while the app boasts an impressive array of features, it lacks some essential ones such as customizable backgrounds and blurring effects. It’s crucial to note that 1) homegrown solutions are often superior, and PIXY, with its dual sensors, might excel even further in this regard, and 2) EMEET STUDIO isn’t exclusively a video conferencing tool, so it’s not always guaranteed that additional apps will provide these specific features.

Unfortunately, Windows Hello facial recognition doesn’t have an IR sensor, a feature I always find lacking. Additionally, it seems that High Dynamic Range (HDR) is also absent from the device.

As an analyst, I find myself grappling with several issues related to the PIXY device. The firmware appears to have some rough edges, causing occasional glitches in its performance. The STUDIO’s persistent update notifications can be overly aggressive and intrusive, and unfortunately, these updates often fail, even when I take precautions like closing any application that might utilize the webcam.

Moreover, the PIXY itself tends to experience unexpected behavior such as drifting off to the side during operation, refusing to enter privacy mode or power down when requested. These inconsistencies have led to a less than optimal user experience.

My main worry is that after a faulty firmware update, the PIXY device refused to function at all and stayed upright, yet its LED light was not active, suggesting it might be switched off.

This issue raises significant concerns about privacy, and I’m doubtful that it can be entirely resolved solely by adjusting the software or firmware.

The issue arises because the PIXY device was persistently recording (I observed the video in STUDIO and other apps), and it wouldn’t switch off or go into privacy mode unless I powered off the computer first and then restarted it. This behavior suggests a software glitch, but what’s more concerning is that it indicates the LED light on PIXY isn’t directly connected to the camera, implying that the device could potentially be active without your knowledge.

It’s a significant privacy issue, and although the pre-launch software and firmware updates significantly enhanced the PIXY’s performance during my test phase, I’m doubtful if this is something that can entirely be resolved from the firmware perspective.

While it’s clear that some cost-cutting measures were taken to achieve this price point, the EMEET PIXY is still a strong contender for one of the best webcams on the market.

In the long run, many problems associated with this product should be addressed via regular software and firmware upgrades, as I observed numerous updates while testing. However, it’s essential to purchase a product based on its current state rather than its potential future improvements, so keep that thought in mind when making your decision.

If you’re on the lookout for a device that offers 4K recording and smart gimbal tracking without stretching your budget, I’d suggest considering the PIXY. However, it’s important to note a concern regarding privacy associated with this product.

While I wouldn’t claim that the PIXY is invulnerable to exploitation, its privacy mode is top-notch. However, a discovered flaw shows that the device can function without its LED indicating this state, which raises some red flags. This issue warrants a cautionary note for privacy-focused individuals.
