If you’re looking for a movie to watch this weekend, especially one that might make you tear up, check out We Live in Time, the 2024 romantic drama starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. It’s now available on HBO Max. While the A24 film had a small theatrical release starting in October 2024, it did reasonably well in cinemas.
The film earned over $58 million globally, making it one of A24’s most successful releases. Critics and audiences both responded positively to We Live in Time, with a 79% rating from critics and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also continuing to perform well on streaming services.
Despite being a truly moving film with a fantastic cast and excellent acting, We Live in Time still hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. It’s the ideal choice for a good cry and a perfect movie to enjoy this weekend.

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are both actors who thoroughly prepare for their roles. They’ve both appeared in Marvel movies – Pugh as Yelena Belova, Black Widow’s sister, and Garfield as one iteration of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield originally played Spider-Man in his own set of films, before appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Dune fans will recognize Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Garfield’s role in Tick, Tick… Boom! subtly references Jonathan Larson and Rent. However, We Live in Time doesn’t require any previous knowledge – it instantly connects you with the characters and makes them feel relatable and interesting.
I just finished watching We Live in Time, and honestly, it’s a really great watch if you’re looking for something impactful but not super long – it’s only an hour and 48 minutes. Don’t let the shorter runtime fool you though, it’s surprisingly emotional! The movie doesn’t waste any time getting into the heart of things; you quickly learn that Florence Pugh’s character, Almut, is dealing with some really tough health issues right from the beginning.
I have a feeling this movie is going to be a real emotional rollercoaster! Be prepared to cry, but it’s not all sadness – the ending is genuinely beautiful. Honestly, what better way to spend a weekend than letting a good movie really move you?
The Cast Is Small But Top-Tier
What stands out about We Live in Time is that, despite having a small number of actors, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh carry the film beautifully. While other characters appear – friends, family, and doctors – the story primarily centers on Pugh and Garfield’s performances.
The actors have fantastic chemistry, which brings the characters in We Live in Time to life, even though most scenes focus on just the two of them. We see their relationship unfold from the initial spark, through tough early talks about what they want in life, and ultimately, as they face a serious health challenge.
Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are both incredibly talented actors, so their strong performances in We Live in Time aren’t entirely unexpected. However, considering how captivating they are – and how much the film relies on them – it’s surprising the movie hasn’t gotten more attention.
“We Live in Time” is a standout film from both Pugh and Garfield, and it’s a great choice for a weekend watch, particularly if you’re in the mood for a good cry.
