Image Comics is home to many fantastic series, and one particularly good one often gets missed. The company was founded to give comic creators ownership of their work, letting them build unique worlds and stories. It started with Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, Whilce Portacio, and Marc Silvestri, and quickly became a success. While popular titles like Youngblood, Spawn, The Savage Dragon, and The Walking Dead came out of this partnership, there are also some lesser-known Image Comics that are well worth checking out.
A comic book series called Birthright, created by Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan, is seriously underrated and deserves a wider audience. It’s been in development for a while, and it’s time someone turned it into a movie or TV show.
Birthright Is a Perfect Image Comics Fantasy Series About Family

The comic book series Birthright first appeared in 2014, created by Skybound Entertainment and published by Image Comics. It begins with a heartbreaking scene: a father and his son, Mikey, are playing catch in a park during a birthday party. When Mikey chases the ball into the woods, he disappears. The police suspect the father of foul play, and the couple’s marriage falls apart due to the suspicion. A year later, Mikey unexpectedly returns – no longer a child, but a grown man – claiming he was away saving the world from a terrible threat.
Birthright was a comic book that jumped between the story of a boy growing up as a warrior in another world and his life back on Earth. Once he returned home, he had to prove his identity to his parents and fight an approaching threat. The story was full of surprises, hinting that the main character wasn’t telling the whole truth and that a major disaster could happen sooner than anyone realized.
This Image Comics series, which ran for 50 issues between 2014 and 2021, created a rich and imaginative world centered around Mikey, his family, and a group of warriors from another realm. The story explores complex ideas about fate versus free will, asking what happens when personal desires clash with a destined path, especially when loved ones are at stake. Though the middle of the series felt a bit slow at times, the overall narrative is well-crafted and reaches a satisfying conclusion. The artwork is also stunning, and the series is truly deserving of its acclaim.
Birthright Is Perfect for a Movie or TV Streaming Adaptation

It’s fascinating to me that the idea of a Birthright movie has been floating around in Hollywood since 2018 – even before the comic book series finished! Skybound Entertainment made a deal with Universal Pictures to turn it into a film, but we haven’t heard anything new about it since. Birthright was actually the third comic they planned to adapt, following Invincible and Kill the Minotaur. Invincible was the only one that actually got made, and though it was a huge hit, it doesn’t look like Birthright or Kill the Minotaur are moving forward anytime soon.
It’s unfortunate to hear that, because the Birthright comic seems ideal for a long-running TV show. Although a movie was initially planned, it might actually work better as a series, similar to Invincible. The main concern is cost – high production values could lead to cancellation if the show doesn’t quickly gain a large audience. Perhaps the best approach would be to create an animated series for streaming, like Invincible.
As a huge fan of the Birthright comic, I’ve always thought it would make an amazing series. But honestly, building the war-ravaged world of Terrenos with live actors would be incredibly expensive, especially since the comic isn’t a huge mainstream hit yet. I think animation is the perfect solution! It would allow them to really bring that world to life and introduce the story to a wider audience. At its heart, Birthright is about a family broken apart, fighting to get back what they’ve lost – and saving the world while they’re at it. That’s a theme that resonates with everyone, and I truly believe Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan’s work deserves to be adapted for a global audience.
