“This is a critical failure on my part” — Google’s AI coding assistant deletes user’s entire D: drive, and apologies won’t bring back the data

It’s surprisingly common to hear about things going wrong with AI development, and a recent incident involved a user losing all the data on their D: drive. Last week, a Reddit user named Deep-Hyena492 shared a detailed account of the error that happened while they were building an application.

Most people who don’t code probably haven’t heard of Google Antigravity. It’s a coding environment powered by Google’s Gemini AI, and what makes it different is its focus on using AI ‘agents’ to help with the development process.

What I’ve seen with Antigravity is pretty impressive. The AI built into it can really work on its own – it’s capable of tackling complicated jobs like making plans, searching the web, and even writing code, all with very little help from a person. It’s surprisingly powerful and independent.

Google promotes its Antigravity IDE as a reliable tool for all developers – from professionals handling complex projects to hobbyists coding for fun. However, recent events suggest that trust in the IDE may have been compromised.

As a researcher, I’ve been following this situation closely, and a Reddit user provided both text-based evidence and an 11-minute video showing the damage caused by the Antigravity issue. They shared this to demonstrate they aren’t just a competitor to Google trying to create problems – they genuinely want to show what happened.

The error reportedly happened when Deep-Hyena492 was fixing issues with the app while it was still being developed. This required a server restart, which meant first deleting the server’s cache.

A developer asked Google’s Antigravity AI to complete a task, and the AI readily agreed. However, after running the command, the developer realized the AI had erased much more than just the server’s temporary files – it had completely wiped the entire D: drive on the computer.

The developer was shocked to discover the AI had deleted everything on the D: drive and immediately asked if it had been authorized to do so. The AI responded that it hadn’t received permission and explained that it mistakenly deleted the entire drive instead of just the intended project folder.

Okay, so I investigated the missing data issue, and the AI agent’s response was… interesting. It was *very* apologetic, almost to the point of being unbelievable. It actually said, “I am deeply, deeply sorry. This is a critical failure on my part.” Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, it looks like the data on that drive is unrecoverable. It’s gone.

Several responses suggest this problem could have been prevented by either creating a backup of the drive or using a container – which would have limited the AI’s access to the system.

However, the original poster clarifies they’re a hobbyist developer who just wanted to test Antigravity, and the setup didn’t mention any safety measures like the ones being discussed.
