This Is Finally Timothée Chalamet’s Oscar Year

He’s become the most prominent movie star of his generation. After gaining widespread recognition in 2017 with leading roles in Call Me by Your Name and a significant part in Lady Bird, his career has consistently grown. It’s been clear for a while that an Academy Award was likely in his future.

He’s received two Best Actor nominations so far. The first, for Call Me by Your Name, established him as a promising new actor, and just being nominated felt like a win. However, his second nomination, for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, felt much closer to an actual victory. If he had won, he would have become the youngest actor ever to win the award, surpassing Adrien Brody, who was also nominated. Ultimately, Brody won again, but Chalamet made a strong impression, suggesting he’s on the verge of major success in Hollywood.

Just months after confidently stating his desire to be remembered as one of the best actors at the SAG Awards, he’s already a strong contender for an Academy Award – and this time, he’s expected to win.

Marty Supreme’s Reviews Put Timothée Chalamet On A Direct Path To Best Actor

Before the awards season really got underway, many Oscar experts were unsure about Marty Supreme. The A24 film, directed by Josh Safdie, was originally planned for a Christmas Day release and wasn’t expected to premiere at the usual fall film festivals. This meant it could potentially emerge as a strong contender later in the season, even after other films had already established themselves. However, the film unexpectedly screened at the New York Film Festival on October 6th, and it’s been considered a major awards hopeful ever since.

It really started to feel like Timothée Chalamet was having a breakthrough moment after the overwhelmingly positive initial reactions to his acting. He’s been the focus of the surprisingly funny and unique marketing campaign for the film, even playfully referencing his recent awards speech in a promotional video. The movie centers on a highly motivated athlete chasing success, and Chalamet has cleverly used this image to promote both the film and his own brand. He manages to make intense ambition seem charming and appealing.

The reviews for the film were released yesterday, December 1st, and it’s now considered a strong contender for the Best Picture Oscar. Our own Todd Gilchrist gave it a perfect score of 10/10. It’s expected to receive many nominations. However, the biggest buzz is around Timothée Chalamet’s performance as Marty Mauser, which is receiving incredible praise. Several critics have even compared him to a young Al Pacino – a huge compliment for any rising star. He’s definitely aiming for an award this year.

I really think Cillian Murphy is going to win this year. Unlike last year when Adrien Brody was clearly ahead for months, even with Timothée Chalamet pushing him, this year’s competition feels much more spread out. We’ve got so many fantastic actors – DiCaprio, Hawke, Jordan, Moura – all giving great performances, but none of them have really pulled away from the pack. But after seeing the incredible reviews for Oppenheimer and how much the studio is pushing it, I honestly believe Cillian has all the momentum now. It feels like the Oscar is his to lose at this point.

It’s interesting that Leonardo DiCaprio, who once mentored Timothée Chalamet on acting, is now likely his biggest competition. Even if DiCaprio delivers a standout performance in One Battle After Another, the film’s buzz isn’t focused on him the way Paul Thomas Anderson’s film is centered around Chalamet. While One Battle After Another might win Best Picture, this Best Actor race feels like Chalamet is taking over as the leading man.
