It’s always a challenge for Star Wars characters who begin in animation to transition to live-action. Ahsoka Tano is a key figure in *Star Wars: The Clone Wars*, where she trained with Anakin Skywalker and played a significant part in his turn to the dark side. She also had an important supporting role in *Star Wars Rebels*, aiding the Rebellion and facing Darth Vader alongside the crew of the Ghost. Despite her importance in these stories, it took over a decade for Ahsoka to appear in live-action, and a few more years before she finally got her own show on Disney+.
As someone who’s been following the Star Wars universe for a while, the positive reception to *Ahsoka* really proves something: characters don’t *have* to be limited by where they start. Seeing Ahsoka make the jump to live-action opens the door for so many others! I’m thinking about fan favorites like Hondo Ohnaka and Asajj Ventress, but honestly, the character who *really* deserves a live-action series is Cal Kestis. There’s already a fantastic fan-made trailer online that shows just how great he could be – seriously, someone at Lucasfilm needs to see it! He’s brimming with potential, and I’m hoping we see him make the leap soon.
Cameron Monaghan Isn’t Getting Rusty in the Fight Department
Although we haven’t heard much about the next *Star Wars Jedi* game, Cameron Monaghan, who plays Cal Kestis, is still involved with the character. He’s reprising his role to voice Kestis in the animated series *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past*, where we see a more optimistic side of the Jedi as he helps Sig Greebling and his friends battle Solitus. It’s great to see Kestis working alongside some well-known characters from the *Star Wars* universe and demonstrating his skills. The only drawback is that this story isn’t considered official canon, so it won’t contribute to the ongoing narrative of Cal Kestis.
Cameron Monaghan has repeatedly expressed his desire to reprise his role as Cal Kestis in a live-action Star Wars project, hoping to expand the character’s story, but so far, no such opportunity has materialized. While waiting for that possibility, he’s been busy with other work, including the Disney film *Tron: Ares*. In *Ares*, Monaghan plays a member of a highly skilled combat unit, and he recently shared behind-the-scenes footage showing off his fighting skills with a staff, taking on multiple opponents. Given how similar this action is to the combat Cal Kestis performs in the *Star Wars Jedi* games, it’s evident Monaghan is prepared and eager to take on a more substantial role in the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars Already Has a Story That Cal Kestis Would Be a Perfect Fit for
Bringing a Star Wars character to life in a live-action show is challenging because the timing and placement have to be right. While Cad Bane’s appearance in *The Book of Boba Fett* seemed logical, it didn’t quite work because it felt forced within a weak ending. To avoid the same issue with Cal Kestis, Lucasfilm should find a natural way to include him in the larger story being built by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau on Disney+. Perhaps a cameo in *Star Wars: Ahsoka*, or even a short series of his own before the overall story concludes, would be a good fit. Either option would allow time to reintroduce a Jedi who’s been absent for a while.
This plan isn’t without potential downsides – it could overshadow the planned third *Star Wars: Jedi* game. However, it could also work in the game’s favor, as Cal Kestis appearing in live-action could help tie his story into the new projects Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are developing. Ultimately, it’s up to Lucasfilm to move forward, but Monaghan is prepared and ensuring everything is ready for a potentially exciting outcome.
