As a passionate movie buff, I’ve witnessed an astonishing array of Hulk transformations over the years – from the menacing Red Hulk to the strategic Weapon H, and let’s not forget about the myriad personalities dwelling within Bruce Banner’s mind, each one unleashing a new facet of the Jade Giant. Among them, the iconic Savage Hulk, the masterfully crafted World-Breaker Hulk, and the relentless force of rage, Kluh, the Hulk’s very own Hulk stand out. Yet, despite the lethal nature of these numerous forms, there’s one that could potentially be the most perilous of them all: Nul, Breaker of Worlds, a version of the Hulk who once came dangerously close to obliterating everything, yet today, he’s been forgotten by many.
Worthy of the Hammer of Nul
Nul, unlike most incarnations of The Hulk, is not an alter ego originating from within Bruce Banner’s mind. Instead, he was brought into existence during the events of “Fear Itself.” In this comic series, the Serpent – a powerful being and brother of Odin, known as the All-Father and God of Fear in Asgardian lore – was released from his centuries-long imprisonment. Upon gaining freedom, the Serpent fed on the terror of humans on Midgard (Earth).
The Serpent then distributed seven mystical hammers to influential individuals worldwide. Upon possession of these hammers, the bearers were compelled to transform into fearsome versions of themselves, now under the control of the Serpent. Their sole purpose became spreading terror and chaos across the globe. It was during this process that Nul came into being.
1. Transformation of The Hulk: One of the hammers touched by The Hulk resulted in his change to Nul. His heroic instincts and will to live vanished, making him a ruthless, destruction-obsessed creature. Moreover, this hammer augmented his strength beyond what The Hulk usually possesses, allowing him to potentially lay waste to the entire world. However, even stronger than this devastating power was Nul, who relentlessly pursued global annihilation.
2. Thor versus Nul: The only being who managed to exert some influence on Nul was Thor, hurling him across the globe with a powerful blow. Unscathed by Thor’s mighty attack, Nul rampaged through the surrounding area, catching the eye of Dracula and his horde of vampires. Not even the immortal bloodsuckers, backed by countless monsters, could deter Nul. They tried to imprison him in an adamantium net reinforced with gravity amplifiers that multiplied Nul’s weight a hundredfold, but he effortlessly shredded through it as if it were insubstantial air.
3. Roadblock in Romania: It was only when a vampire summoned the image of Betty begging him to resist the hammer’s control that Hulk resurfaced and destroyed the Hammer of Nul, freeing himself from its influence. Tragically, this was merely a temporary setback for Nul.
4. Persistence of Nul: Despite being freed, Nul refused to be vanquished. He remained an imposing threat, continuing his destructive rampage and defying all who dared oppose him.
Unrestrained Death and Destruction
The Hulk, in his frenzy, broke free and unwittingly released the spirit of Nul into the world. Initially confined to a host and limited by the Hulk’s powers, Nul transformed into an immense black creature bearing a resemblance to its former self. Driven by a desire for chaos and destruction on a grand scale, Nul attracted attention when it approached the Concordance Engine – powerful devices created by the Beyonders to manipulate reality. These engines are almost omnipotent and respond to the will of those nearby, having once resurrected Doctor Strange’s deceased lover Martha due to his thoughts. The Defenders were formed specifically to combat Nul, but even heavyweights like Doctor Strange, Red She-Hulk, and the Silver Surfer struggled to hold him back. Eventually, Nul evolved into a manifestation of Death itself, leaving those in its proximity feeble and sick. In the end, it was only possible to defeat Nul by employing the power of the Concordance Engine directly, as wielded by Prester Omega to erase Nul from existence entirely.
Undeniably, Nul stood out among all the Hulks as one of the most formidable and potent versions, virtually indestructible by anyone or anything sans the Enigma Force, a level of invincibility second only to the Beyonders. Yet, despite his staggering power and fearsome nature, Nul has been relegated to obscurity in current times. It seems that even for such a monstrous figure, if one lacks unique characteristics distinguishing them from the myriad other indestructible Hulks, they risk slipping into obscurity. Nonetheless, Nul remains an intriguing and entertaining take on the character.
