Marlon Brando’s character Jor-El in the 1978 film Superman: The Movie warns Kal-El (Superman) before he is sent to Earth from his dying planet. He says, ‘You’ll travel far, little Kal-El,’ implying that Superman will have a long journey ahead. Jor-El adds, ‘We won’t abandon you, even in death.’ His wisdom, knowledge, emotions, and more will be passed on to Superman. Jor-El promises that Superman will carry him with him throughout his life, and Superman will see the world through Jor-El’s eyes just as Jor-El will see it through Superman’s.

Jor-El says, “The roles will reverse, and what was once father will become son, and vice versa.” He then puts a crystal inside the spaceship with the baby. “This is everything I can give you, Kal-El,” he adds. In another 18 years, Clark Kent – adopted by Kansas farmers – will use that crystal to call forth his Arctic Fortress of Solitude. Within this fortress, a hologram of Jor-El spends the next 12 years training the Last Son to transform into the powerful Man of Steel, as played by Christopher Reeve.

Jor-El tells you, “Now it’s your turn to return to your new world and help humanity as a whole. Blend in with them, Kal-El, so you can find where your abilities are most needed. Remember always the honor of your unique lineage. You have the potential to make them great, Kal-El, they aspire to be. They need guidance, though; they’re searching for a light to follow. That’s why I’ve sent you: my one and only son.”

In a stark contrast to Bradley Cooper’s Jor-El in James Gunn’s Superman, when Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) interrupts the Fortress of Solitude and broadcasts a Kryptonian message, the world, including Superman (David Corenswet), discovers that his birth parents intended him to rule Earth as the Last Son of Krypton. This revelation triggers both a personal and public crisis for the hero.

In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Gunn stated, “I was searching for an actor who could embody Jor-El, someone tall and imposing as we picture that character. Essentially, I wanted someone capable of following in the footsteps of the legendary Marlon Brando.

Apart from Houlty portraying Lex Luthor as an adversary, Cooper is the most prominent figure in Superman, despite his role essentially being a highly publicized brief appearance. Previously, Gunn disclosed that the multi-Academy Award nominee, known for voicing Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy films, was merely lending assistance to him.

In a previous conversation, Gunn described him as a friend. Since the release of the Guardians movies, they’ve kept in regular touch, and Gunn holds him in high regard, both as an actor and a director. In simpler terms, Gunn asked if he could do a favor for him – travel to England, get filmed in 3D, and create a hologram of him for the role of Jor-El. Surprisingly, he agreed without hesitation.

In this new movie, David Corenswet portrays both Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan takes on Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult embodies Lex Luthor.
