As a fan of the classic Mel Brooks comedy “Spaceballs,” I can’t help but feel a thrill knowing a sequel is in the works! The original film, with its witty and absurd take on the space opera genre, left an indelible mark with its hilarious one-liners. With such high expectations, it’s clear that the new installment has some big shoes to fill. However, with a talented creative team behind it, I’m confident it will be another crowd-pleaser.
There have been previous attempts to create a sequel, but unfortunately, they never managed to break free from development limbo. Interestingly, there were whispers of a proposed sequel that aimed to capture the original’s comedic essence.
As a passionate film enthusiast, based on what I’ve gathered so far, this wild idea for a movie seems promising and something I could certainly support.
Rick Moranis Pitched a Sequel Called Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II
During an interview with Heeb, actor Rick Moranis – famously known for his role as the Darth Vader-esque character Dark Helmet in Spaceballs – shared that he proposed a sequel idea to Mel Brooks shortly after the first movie was released.
Mel expressed interest in making a follow-up because the original video had gained cult status, as reported by the outlet. However, it didn’t do well at the box office; instead, it became a cult hit. MGM was keen on a sequel and my concept for it was ‘Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II’. Unfortunately, I couldn’t reach an agreement with Mel, as I couldn’t finalize the deal.
Despite some ambiguity about specific aspects, that’s a pitch perfectly in line with the film’s style – it’s both mysterious and nonsensical, traits synonymous with the movie. Not many films have skipped their sequels, but Thankskilling 3 is one such example; Dude Bro Party Massacre III also skipped its first two installments to go straight to a third. In both instances, the events depicted were excessively wild and outlandish, much like this memorable pitch would have been if brought to life.
It’s been discovered that financial difficulties were a key factor preventing the project from coming to fruition. Unfortunately, negotiations between Moranis and Brooks didn’t lead to an agreement that was agreeable for both parties. In a recent interview with Heeb, the actor provided some insights into the issues encountered.
Moranis clarified that at the time, he wasn’t aware of the details of the budget or the project. However, the proposal given to him was impractical for execution. It was around two to three years ago, and discussing the specifics isn’t helpful due to its unique nature. Essentially, he couldn’t reach an agreement on this project, which would have been something he was interested in pursuing.
Although it’s unfortunate that the sequel we were expecting didn’t take flight so many years back, we’re still thrilled that a new installment has been announced, set to launch in 2027. What’s more, Moranis (and others) will be reprising their roles.
Spaceballs 2: Everything We Know (So Far)
Alongside other returning actors is Brooks, who previously portrayed Yogurt – a character reminiscent of Yoda from Star Wars – and President Skroob, the leader of Planet Spaceball. It’s likely that he will reprise these famous roles in the upcoming sequel, and he also acts as a producer for this long-awaited project.
Not only that, but we’re excited to share that Daphne Zuniga, fondly recognized by fans for her iconic role as Princess Vespa, will be back for the sequel. Similarly, Bill Pullman, known for his portrayal of the character Lone Star, who resembles Han Solo, has signed on too. It’s delightful to see so many familiar faces from the original cast joining us.
Hey there, fellow movie enthusiasts! I’ve got some exciting news to share. You might recognize Josh Gad from “Pixels.” Well, guess what? He’s teamed up with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez to pen the script for an upcoming sequel. But
In case some minor aspects seem unclear, the story of “Spaceballs” finds us following star pilot Lone Star (Pullman), along with his unique partner Barf (John Candy, who is half-canine and half-human), as they embark on a mission to save Princess Vespa (Zuniga). She’s been kidnapped by the villainous Dark Helmet (Moranis) in an effort to obtain more oxygen for Planet Spaceball.
Legendary actor Moranis had a brilliant idea for a Spaceballs sequel that he shared with filmmaker Brooks, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition. Still, we eagerly anticipate what Greenbaum and their team have planned for us in the upcoming sequel.
