Star Wars is famous for its dramatic entrances, like Darth Vader’s unforgettable scene in Rogue One and Luke Skywalker’s appearance in the finale of The Mandalorian season 2. However, when it comes to introducing characters, especially those who are a master and apprentice, one unexpected pair stands out as the most impactful.
Honestly, the biggest surprise for me wasn’t a plot twist, but how these two Force-sensitive characters were introduced. It’s genuinely shocking they weren’t part of the Skywalker Saga or any of the original films. In fact, I’d argue they have the best master-apprentice introduction of any Star Wars story – and it happened on the Ahsoka series, completely out of the blue. It’s a fantastic moment that really elevates the show.
Baylan Skoll & Shin Hati Have The Best Master & Apprentice Intro
Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll first appeared in the opening episode of Ahsoka. The show starts with these mysterious figures, who present themselves as Jedi, boarding a ship while keeping their faces hidden. What’s even more unusual is that they wield orange lightsabers, a color rarely seen and raising questions about its significance.
It quickly becomes clear these characters aren’t Jedi, as they begin killing everyone on the ship. While this might usually suggest they’re Sith, they don’t actually fit that description either. Instead, this pair represents perhaps the closest Star Wars has come to showing characters who are truly Gray Jedi or Dark Jedi.
Shin and Baylan’s debut as a pair is arguably the strongest master-apprentice introduction in all of Star Wars. It starts with intrigue and trickery, culminating in a powerful display as they effortlessly defeat anyone who challenges them. Even though they don’t fit the traditional Jedi or Sith mold and aren’t connected to the Skywalker family, their introduction remains the best of its kind.
This Introduction Bests Even Some Of The Most Iconic Duos
It’s surprisingly rare to see a Jedi Master and their apprentice introduced together on screen. This actually helped Shin and Baylan stand out as a strong introduction. While Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano are a famous Star Wars duo, their first meeting wasn’t a traditional introduction. Ahsoka was added later in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and their initial scenes together feel a bit awkward.
Even though Luke Skywalker is one of the most powerful Jedi in Star Wars, he never had a traditional fight scene with his master, like we see in this moment. While he was trained by legendary Jedi like Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, he never actually fought with them in battle – not even Obi-Wan on the Death Star.
While Baylan and Shin’s introduction in Ahsoka is particularly striking, the entrance of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is also very memorable. Like Baylan and Shin, they immediately engage in a fight together, destroying droids and showcasing Obi-Wan’s witty humor.
While Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are a classic duo, Baylan and Shin make a more impactful first impression. Their entrance is full of action and surprises, and it’s the first time we see them together as a team. This is especially effective because we hadn’t seen Qui-Gon before, while Obi-Wan was already familiar from the original movies. Plus, Baylan and Shin are distinct and memorable characters, which makes their introduction even stronger.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Baylan and Shin in the second season of Ahsoka, and hoping for some memorable new scenes with them. But even before that, these unique Force-users deserve recognition for their impressive debut.
