Over the past few decades, fandoms have flourished significantly, with numerous beloved properties receiving revivals. For instance, we’ve seen a surge in new Star Trek series, live-action Disney remakes, and Disney’s Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. However, it’s important to note that not all of this new content was universally appreciated. For example, the Star Wars films stirred up some controversy within the community. The trilogy began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which followed events from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and introduced key characters like Rey and Finn. Upon reflection, there’s a popular theory regarding these two characters that could have steered the entire trilogy in a different direction.
Throughout “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the character Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley, discovers to harness the Force that surrounds her, empowering her to align with the Resistance. In the film’s dramatic finale, as she engages Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), a subtle hint is dropped that foreshadows an alternate possibility, if the creative minds behind the “Star Wars” Sequel Trilogy had not shifted their direction. During the fight sequence, Finn (John Boyega) briefly appears, even though he doesn’t fare well, the significance lies in his use of a lightsaber – a detail that carries a powerful message.
The Theory That Could Have Saved It All
This leads us to the initial part of an astounding hypothesis: Finn exhibits signs of being Force-sensitive. Advertisements indeed lend credence to this notion, as Finn is often depicted wielding Rey’s lightsabers in promotional materials. A second look at the trilogy uncovers numerous subtle indications that strengthen this theory, such as several instances within Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Initially, Finn seemed to be chasing after Rey to share a secret, which led many to speculate that it might be a declaration of love. However, what Finn was actually revealing was his Force Sensitivity – something he was just beginning to understand and accept. He wanted to discuss this sensitive matter only with trusted friends, making the revelation more about his personal journey than romantic feelings. Does that clarify things?
In the Star Wars saga, if Finn had an affinity for the Force, it could have significantly expanded his character’s influence across all three films, not merely portraying him as one of two Jedi battling against the encroaching darkness. Instead, we might witness a reoccurrence of another notable Star Wars trope involving Finn.
When Light Turns to Dark
Considering the initial development of the Trilogy, if Rey had been shown as a formidable force from the start and Finn was set up to be another Force-wielder, what does that potential trajectory imply? Since Rey exhibited an early inclination towards the Dark Side, it’s not difficult to predict where this story might have headed.
The transformation of Rey into a Sith could have significantly altered the course of events in the trilogy. Given Star Wars’ knack for compelling betrayal narratives, it’s plausible that the franchise might have effectively executed this plot twist once more. This shift would have seen Rey and Finn on opposing sides, thereby introducing additional tension and a sense of desolation to the ongoing conflict.
It’s uncertain how Kylo Ren would have fit into this scenario; perhaps he would have used temptation as a tool to draw Rey closer, or maybe he would have left behind a void for her to fill. Given the patterns often seen among Sith users, it seems plausible that their relationship could have followed a familiar path: with Rey attempting to overthrow Kylo, possibly supported by her own apprentice. Unfortunately, we were denied the chance to explore this potential narrative twist.
Doing Justice to Characters And Fans
Instead of positioning Rey and Finn on opposite sides of the battlefield, which would have delighted fans given its strategic brilliance, it could also be seen as a fitting development for their characters. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn was established as a crucial character in the franchise, but his role seemed to diminish progressively in subsequent films.
Many people, both fans and actors, have voiced their opinions about this, as they feel that the Sequel Trilogy didn’t treat several characters justly. If the series had stayed true to its initial vision (assuming the theory holds water), we think it could have salvaged the trilogy.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but ponder if we’ll witness the emergence of a Dark Side Rey or the resolution of Finn’s journey under the cinema lights. Yet, there seems to be a glimmer of hope – Finn’s tale will unfold in the expansive Star Wars universe through canon novels, starting with “Star Wars: The Last Order.
