This Straw Hat Pirate in One Piece Has the Worst Backstory in the Crew (And You’ll Never Convince Me Otherwise)

Since 1997, the epic manga “One Piece” by Eiichiro Oda has been captivating us with a myriad of fascinating characters. This series is renowned for its emotional narratives that lend depth even to minor characters. However, this depth is particularly evident among the Straw Hat Pirates, the main crew. Over time, Luffy has amassed a crew of ten members, each with their unique objectives and motivations for sailing with the future Pirate King. As the story unfolds, we learn about their pasts, many of which are so poignant they make your heart ache. Characters like Robin, Sanji, Brook, Nami, and others all experience hardships at the hands of author Eiichiro Oda.

Out of all the remarkable characters, one stands out as having a less impressive backstory – Roronoa Zoro. Known as Luffy’s first mate and a pivotal figure in the series, Zoro appeared relatively early in the story, not long after Luffy embarked on his grand adventure. As the initial crew member, Zoro has been a significant aid to Luffy from the very start. Moreover, he was the first to formally acknowledge Luffy as the future King of Pirates, reflecting his confidence in the man he chose to follow.

Zoro Has the Simplest Backstory in the Crew

In the narrative, Zoro’s backstory wasn’t as extensively developed as other characters because he was initially introduced quite early on. We get a brief insight into his childhood that illuminates why he is so resolute about becoming the World’s Strongest Swordsman – a goal he had set for himself and also in honor of his childhood friend, Kuina. She was the daughter of the Dojo master where Zoro honed his swordsmanship skills. Although Kuina possessed remarkable talent, she felt limited by societal norms as a girl, fearing that her physical strength would never match that of grown men. Despite this, Zoro maintained faith in her abilities, having never emerged victorious against her in a duel.

Zoro looked up to and was jealous of Kuina’s swordsmanship abilities, and they both vowed to strive for the title of the world’s strongest swordsman. Sadly, the next day after their promise, Zoro found out that Kuina had tragically fallen down the stairs. Determined to keep his word, he carried on with his journey to honor her memory. Although this story might seem straightforward compared to others, it does convey a sense of life’s unpredictability and establishes his goal, which isn’t too shabby.

Oda Didn’t Fully Explore Zoro’s Family Tree in the Wano Country Saga

Since the East Blue Saga in One Piece, Oda has not delved deeply into Zoro’s past until the Wano Country Saga. Here, we discover that he hails from the esteemed Samurai clan, being the son of Roronoa Arashi who perished approximately two decades ago during a battle against pirates. Additionally, Zoro is a bloodline of Ryuma, the legendary swordsman of Wano, whose corpse was manipulated by Gecko Moria as a marionette. Tragically, his mother succumbed to an illness following him and found herself in the Shimotsuki Village within the East Blue.

In the narrative, it wasn’t explained how or when the character arrived at that place, despite Oda having ample time to delve deeper into Zoro’s story. His lineage, too, remained undetailed in Wano, with Oda eventually disclosing it through a Q&A session, causing some disappointment among fans. Given the critical stage the plot had reached, it seemed more fitting for Oda to concentrate on the ongoing battle and lore expansion rather than dedicating significant time to a character whose introduction occurred two decades prior.

Zoro Doesn’t Need a Backstory to Be an Exceptional Character

Despite Zoro not having a standout backstory compared to other Straw Hats in One Piece, this doesn’t diminish his status as an outstanding character. He carries a unique essence within the crew that no one else can replicate. Although he plays a vital role supporting Luffy, he remains an individual with his own ambitions. He trains tirelessly each day to reach his objectives. Alongside Sanji and Luffy, Zoro forms one of the top trios in Shonen genre. As long as future Pirate Kings stand by Luffy’s side, they can conquer anything.

Zoro might not have the typical convoluted past like other characters, yet he doesn’t lack greatness because of it. His destiny is grand whether his backstory is tinged with sorrow or not. Despite being perceived as aloof by some fans, Zoro is essentially a reserved character who struggles to express his feelings clearly. However, this shyness doesn’t diminish his concern for others; instead, it adds an alluring layer of complexity to one of One Piece‘s most cherished Straw Hats.
