Tokyo Game Show 2025 is coming to a close, but Xbox fans of Japanese role-playing games received one last exciting announcement during the PC Gaming Show.
Humble Games and Riyo Games recently released a new trailer for their upcoming JRPG, Threads of Time. First announced last year, the game is a turn-based RPG featuring pixel art and a story heavily inspired by the classic Square Enix title, Chrono Trigger.
The latest trailer showcases more of Threads of Time’s gameplay, clearly demonstrating its inspiration from classic pixel art games.
Threads of Time is a story about a team of heroes who are tasked with saving history. They must revive the Time Knights and prevent villains from changing the past to suit their own dark purposes.
To defeat the villains, our heroes will journey through different eras, gather powerful allies, and fight monsters and enemies in strategic, turn-based combat.
The trailer for Tokyo Game Show 2025 strongly features the game’s core concept: players traveling through time with their team to various eras. These include prehistoric times with dinosaurs, the medieval period, a far-off future, and a world after a global catastrophe.
As you progress, you’ll meet a diverse cast of characters who will join your team – from fierce Viking warriors and powerful mages, to futuristic robots and even ninjas with a demonic secret! There’s a wide variety of allies to discover.
We even get to see snippets of Threads of Time’s turn-based combat system in this trailer.
The user interface includes a bar at the bottom of the screen that indicates when a character is battling an enemy. This suggests the game will feature abilities that let you control the timing of enemy turns. You’ll also have access to a variety of skills for your team, including powerful attacks and defensive moves designed to redirect enemy attention.
We also get a cool scene where two characters – Barza, who’s a rat-like person, and Rin, a ninja – team up to fight a bat monster.
Okay, the trailer ended with this *amazing* animated scene! All our heroes are teaming up to fight this seriously creepy villain – he’s wearing a horned mask and honestly looks like the one pulling all the strings, the guy who’s trying to mess with time itself. It was epic!
The wait for this awesome-looking Xbox JRPG’s release date is going to be brutal
I’ve been watching the trailers for Threads of Time, and wow, it’s *really* clear they love Chrono Trigger! It’s not even a secret – they’re definitely taking a lot of inspiration from that classic, and honestly, I’m totally okay with that!
Both games center around time travel and a mission to prevent a bleak future. They share a retro style with pixelated 16-bit graphics, and use a turn-based combat system where characters can work together for powerful combined attacks.
But that’s not necessarily negative, because Threads of Time aims to offer a unique approach.
Threads of Time has a beautiful, classic look updated with modern HD-2D graphics and the power of Unreal Engine 5. The game is aiming to include even more playable characters than the beloved classic, Chrono Trigger.
Having been a big fan of Chrono Trigger, I’m really excited about Threads of Time. It looks like a fantastic follow-up, and I actually think it might be even better than Sea of Stars, which I already gave a perfect 5-star review.
We don’t know when this game will be released yet, so it will likely be a while before we can play it.
Rest assured, we’re closely monitoring the release of Threads of Time and will let you, our JRPG fans, know as soon as it becomes available on Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.
