In the world of DC Comics, there are many iconic duos that instantly come to mind. Of course, we have the legendary pairing of Batman with Superman, often referred to as “The World’s Finest,” and Batman alongside Robin, known as the “Dynamic Duo.” Other beloved partnerships include The Flash with Green Lantern, Green Arrow paired with either Green Lantern or Black Canary. These duos have a rich history that stretches back to TV series and films. Readers enjoy witnessing their favorite heroes interact, whether it’s watching them argue or team up. This dynamic is equally popular in comics, and it’s been far too long since we last saw one of our favorite teams reunited on the page.
As a devoted fan, I’d express it like this: Stepping into the shoes of my legendary fathers – Superman and Batman – I, Jon Kent (Superboy), and Robin (Damian Wayne) have taken on the mantle to safeguard our world. Despite being sons of two iconic heroes, we couldn’t be more distinct in our outlooks; I, with an optimistic and warm heart, and Damian, who carries a jaded, cold demeanor. This disparity is a testament to the unique upbringings that shaped us. Yet when we united as the Super Sons, we’ve left DC readers spellbound with our dynamic partnership.
Superboy and Robin Were The Best as the Super-Sons
In 2017, Writer Peter J. Tomasi (known for his work on Batman & Robin and Superman) collaborated with artist Jorge Jimenez (renowned for Earth 2) for the series Super Sons, which was a part of DC Rebirth. The comic not only showcased the duo’s encounters with villains but also offered glimpses into their private lives. While the grand action sequences in comics are entertaining, it’s during the more tranquil scenes that the true essence of a story unfolds, particularly in the portrayal of interpersonal relationships. This was particularly evident in Super Sons.
One reason I found Super Sons particularly attractive was the stunning artwork by Jorge Jimenez. At that time, he was primarily recognized for his contributions to DC’s Earth 2 series, prior to gaining acclaim on projects like Justice League and Batman. The visual appeal of Super Sons was among the most striking on comic book shelves, a testament to the talent of Jimenez and colorist Alejandro Sánchez.
Refreshingly, a younger iteration of the World’s Finest duo breathed new life into their adventures. Batman and Superman have been in the superhero business for quite some time, whereas their offspring were still finding their footing. This dynamic added an element of surprise and tension to the Super Sons series. Jon Kent influenced Damian Wayne favorably, and Damian’s characteristics also resonated with Jon. They complemented each other remarkably well, a pity they haven’t been showcased in a continuous series. The sequels we got were more like extensions of Super Sons, such as Adventures of the Super Sons, Challenge of the Super Sons, and the animated film Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons.
Super Sons Can Still Work, Even With Them Growing Up
During Brian Michael Bendis’ tenure on Superman and Action Comics, DC opted for a contentious move by growing up Jon Kent, transforming him from a young Superboy into an adolescent who was now older than Damian Wayne. This shift significantly altered their relationship, yet the two young superheroes continued to foster their strong friendship. The transformation of the endearing Jon Kent into the potential successor of Superman has sparked much debate, with supporters found on both sides of the discussion. Unfortunately, the bond between the Super Sons was a victim of this change.
Don’t worry, there’s hope yet for the Super Sons! With the right team of creators, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne can be reunited, embarking on brand new escapades. Despite Jon growing older, the Super Sons concept remains viable. Previously, we’ve seen their adult versions in backup stories for Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s Wonder Woman, as well as alternate universe versions in the DCeased universe.
Whenever you pair up Jon Kent and Damian Wayne, something extraordinary occurs. Let’s continue exploring this extraordinary dynamic in a continuous DC comic series.
