Many consider “Peaky Blinders” to be one of the best TV shows of the last ten years, with its excellent writing and captivating acting. While the show has many memorable moments, one scene particularly stands out and had a lasting impact on the character of Thomas Shelby. Even though the series ended over three years ago, the world of Peaky Blinders continues to expand.
In addition to Cillian Murphy returning as Tommy Shelby in a new film, Netflix has announced a Peaky Blinders prequel series, as well as two other spinoff shows. While fans can expect more thrilling drama, these new projects will face a high bar to live up to the most memorable moments of the original series.
Season 2 of Peaky Blinders featured several strong episodes, but “Episode 6” was truly exceptional. The season finale was a high point for the series, delivering a shocking twist – a fake-out death – that not only surprised viewers but deeply impacted Tommy, leading to lasting changes in his character.
Peaky Blinders’ Season 2 Finale Made Tommy Feel Limitless
From the beginning of Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby was shown to be incredibly driven. But after making it through the dramatic season 2 finale, he seemed capable of anything. In the season 6 finale, after killing Michael, Tommy famously declared, “I have no limitations.” This line echoed a previous, memorable confrontation with an enemy and has since become a signature quote for his character.
The show offers a genuine look into Tommy’s confidence, as he truly believes he’s capable of anything. While this attitude likely developed over time, the season two finale appears to be a turning point where his mindset dramatically shifted.
Tommy Shelby has faced death many times throughout Peaky Blinders, but the most harrowing experience happened in season two. When his plot to eliminate Inspector Campbell began to fall apart, Tommy was captured by three assassins and taken to a secluded spot. They gave him a final cigarette and allowed him a few last words before attempting to kill him.
Kneeling by a graveside, Tommy braced for death until an assassin eliminated his companions, revealing a mission from Winston Churchill. Though deeply disturbed by the experience, surviving felt empowering, leading Tommy to take increasingly risky and ambitious actions.
Starting in season three, Tommy Shelby relentlessly pursued expanding his criminal organization and increasing his power, often defying his family in the process. Surviving a confrontation with Inspector Campbell seems to be the turning point where he started to believe he was invincible, which makes the title of his upcoming film particularly meaningful.
Tommy’s Fearless Attitude Was Both His Greatest Strength & Biggest Weakness
Fans of Peaky Blinders generally adore Thomas Shelby, even with his imperfections. His bravery was a key part of his appeal. Though he often felt stressed and anxious about what might happen, he consistently made daring choices throughout the show, fully aware of the risks involved.
Tommy’s willingness to take risks was a key to his success, letting him achieve things others wouldn’t even attempt. Facing powerful enemies like Luca Changretta and Oswald Mosley would have defeated most criminals, but Tommy used his influence and clever strategies to overcome them, even though Mosley managed to escape.
I’ve always been amazed by how he consistently set incredibly high goals for himself and then actually achieved them. It was a testament to his sheer willpower and brilliant planning. But honestly, I think his stubbornness ultimately held him back. Seeing how his actions impacted the person he loved most in Peaky Blinders – how she got caught up in all the drama – it really made me realize his relentless drive cost him a chance at genuine happiness. It was heartbreaking to watch.
John and Polly, two of his most beloved family members, also died while loyal to the Peaky Blinders. His stubbornness and refusal to compromise drove a wedge between him and people like Michael and Finn. Ultimately, while his fearlessness helped him achieve power and wealth, it led to the loss of his loved ones and family connections.
Why Tommy’s Fake-Out Death Remains Peaky Blinders’ Greatest Ever Scene
Inspector Campbell was the primary antagonist for the first two seasons of Peaky Blinders, so the stakes were incredibly high going into the season 2 finale. Tommy devised a brilliant plan that worked well for most of the episode, but even after Polly killed the main villain, it seemed Tommy would die – he was surrounded and held at gunpoint.
Back when the show wasn’t as popular and its renewal wasn’t guaranteed, it seemed likely Tommy Shelby would die. Instead, a surprising twist revealed one of his captors was secretly working for Winston Churchill, shocking the audience and hinting at a thrilling continuation of the story.
The acting was flawless, especially Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of a wide range of emotions – from anger and shock to acceptance and stress. Combined with fantastic music and visuals, and a cleverly delivered twist, this episode stands out as one of the very best in Peaky Blinders.
The powerful ending solidified the second season as one of the best of Peaky Blinders, setting the show up for lasting success and cementing its status as a modern classic. Tommy’s feigned death is now considered a pivotal moment in the series, fundamentally changing both his character and the direction of Peaky Blinders.
