Thomas the Tank Engine, a beloved character for generations of British children, is getting a makeover. Mattel has announced plans to update the look of Thomas and relaunch the entire ‘Thomas & Friends’ series.
Mattel announced that Thomas the Tank Engine will get a fresh, updated design as part of a larger refresh of the brand coming later this year.
I’m really excited to hear that Mattel is giving the brand a big refresh! From what I’ve read in The Hollywood Reporter, they’re not just making new movies or shows – they’re planning a whole immersive experience with original content, live events, and even merchandise. It sounds like they’re truly starting a new chapter for the brand, and as a fan, I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared in a series of children’s books by Reverend W. Awdry in 1945. Though the books were well-loved, Thomas became a global phenomenon when the television series debuted on ITV in the UK in 1984.
As a lifelong movie and TV buff, I remember this series being a total fixture of my childhood! What really stood out, though, was the incredible voiceover talent. Ringo Starr, of all people, was the very first narrator, which was amazing. But it didn’t stop there! Over the years, and depending on where you were watching, they had a rotating cast of big names – Pierce Brosnan, George Carlin, even Alec Baldwin! It was always a fun surprise to hear who was telling the story.

Thomas & Friends has changed how it looks over the years. It started with carefully made model trains filmed as if they were real, then moved to computer-generated images (CGI). Most recently, the show switched to traditional 2D animation, and the newest version finished airing on Netflix at the end of last year.
Mattel says the updated Thomas & Friends will blend familiar, classic features with modern elements. This approach aims to appeal to today’s young children while still honoring what fans have loved about the brand for generations.
According to Ted Wu, a Mattel executive, the Thomas & Friends brand has been a beloved part of families’ lives for over 80 years, and its updated design honors both its history and its exciting future.
We brought back the classic things parents and children adore about Thomas & Friends, while also giving the show a fresh, modern look for today’s preschoolers. Real train features, a sense of lasting quality, and heartfelt stories will continue to be at the heart of Thomas & Friends for years to come.
