Three Years From Now, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fans Will Have A lot to Be Thankful For

Good news for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans! After an R-rated movie was canceled, a new film is planned for release in three years. The Turtles first appeared in a comic book in 1984 and have since become a pop culture staple with many TV shows, cartoons, and films. They’ve had a trilogy in the 90s, a standalone movie in 2007, and two more films in the 2010s, plus an animated movie in 2023. This upcoming release continues the franchise’s long history.

According to Deadline, a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 17, 2028. This will be Paramount’s fourth Turtles film, following the two live-action movies from the 2010s and the animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem released in 2023. The movie is set to premiere just before Thanksgiving in 2028, and is one of two family films planned by the studio for the holiday season. A Sonic the Hedgehog event movie will follow a month later, timed for Christmas.

The New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Replaces The R-Rated Version

The new movie reveals why Paramount canceled its plans for an R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. The project was intended to be a more mature take on the Turtles, based on the The Last Ronin comic storyline—a dark future where only one Turtle survives and seeks revenge for his brothers. While this would have been a very intense, adults-only movie, Paramount now believes a family-friendly holiday film will be more profitable.

A movie idea involving the last Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle seeking revenge on Shredder’s grandson – and avenging the deaths of his brothers and Casey Jones – had a lot of potential. It could have been as exciting as recent Predator movies, but even grittier. The plan was to use the same blend of live-action and computer animation as the 2010 films. However, the Turtles have generally been made for younger audiences, and Paramount understood that to continue the success of the franchise – which has already earned over a billion dollars – they needed to stay true to what had worked in the past.

Neal H. Moritz, the producer behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, is now working on a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. Paramount is hoping to build on its existing franchises with this release, which is scheduled for Thanksgiving and expected to be a large-scale blockbuster in the style of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films from the 2010s. The studio aims to appeal to a broad audience, so they’re planning to bring in a well-known director and cast some popular actors.

A follow-up to the animated film Teenage Mutant Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was originally scheduled for September 17, 2027, but its release is now uncertain. The movie was delayed from 2026 to 2027, and Paramount may not want to release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films in consecutive years, particularly considering the significant investment they’re planning for a live-action/CGI hybrid film in 2028.
