Like all great monster stories, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is fundamentally about people. This is especially clear in Season 2, Episode 3. After Cate unintentionally unleashes Titan X, the characters are left heartbroken and spread out around the world. Cate is consumed by guilt, believing she’s responsible for the destruction she fears this new Titan will cause.
Keiko and Hiroshi team up to try and gain control of the new creature, now called Co’cai. This leads to a surprising reunion for Hiroshi, who unexpectedly gets to spend time with Keiko, whom he thought was gone. It also brings a very strange and long-running storyline into focus.
Monarch’s Strangest Subplot Involves Hiroshi’s Family

The first season of Monarch began after a major event called G-Day. Cate was sent to Japan believing her father had died, but she was shocked to discover he’d been living a double life. He had two families – two children who didn’t know about each other. This revelation was a huge surprise for both Cate and her newly discovered brother, Kentaro.
The Randa children quickly began searching for their father, and their investigation kept pointing them to Monarch – the organization where he’d worked for years, but had recently left. While the story didn’t focus much on his personal life, there were suggestions that Hiroshi felt trapped, having fallen in love with two women and trying to maintain both relationships. He seemed unwilling to face the hurt he’d caused either family… but Monarch is now handling the consequences of his actions.
Keiko and Hiroshi Are More Alike Than They Think

The show Monarch frequently jumps around in time within the Monsterverse, and the flashbacks in Season 2 have a specific, though understated, goal. They highlight the similarities between Keiko and her son by showing that she also had a love life with two different men, Lee and Bill. While Season 1 suggested Keiko chose Bill and didn’t pursue a relationship with Lee, Season 2 revealed they actually had a brief romantic encounter back in 1957.
Keiko regretted a single night she’d shared with someone else. The consequences were unexpectedly far-reaching. She wrote a letter to Lee, ending their relationship and reaffirming her commitment to Bill. However, Lee disappeared, and Bill packed up and left. Years later, in 1962, Bill found the letter to Lee, and that’s when he decided to abandon Keiko’s son, Hiroshi. Keiko’s divided affections ultimately led to heartbreak and the breakdown of her family.
Monarch is Finally Dealing with its Big Hiroshi Problem

Hiroshi was a mysterious figure in the first season of Monarch, and the show clearly intended to expand his role if he survived. However, making him a compelling character is proving difficult. Viewers need to understand his motivations, even if they don’t agree with them, and his past relationships are currently hindering that. While flashbacks could offer some insight, they don’t seem justified for a character like Hiroshi, so the writers need to find a more creative way to connect him with the audience.
The show Monarch is taking a clever approach to developing Hiroshi’s character. By showing Keiko’s past and making the audience feel for her, the show is also encouraging viewers to understand Hiroshi. Currently, Keiko is attempting to reconnect with her son, which forces her to confront the parallels between them—including whether her own past actions were justified and the damaging effects of her betrayals.
Okay, so usually the writing on Monarch isn’t super nuanced – sometimes the characters just say what they’re feeling a little too directly. But honestly, this storyline is different. The writers are really handling a tough situation they created with Hiroshi, and it’s actually making him a much more interesting character. Look, his actions are still wrong, and we’re not going to start agreeing with what he’s done, but I’m starting to understand him, and even feel a little bad for him, which is a surprise!
