Let’s delve into the secrets behind the creation of your favorite visual effects in the movie Thunderbolts, featuring the charismatic Lewis Pullman as Bob. In this film, we were introduced to his superhero persona, Sentry, who harbors a malevolent side known as The Void. Crafting these aspects for the silver screen required a talented team of visual effects specialists, as well as other breathtaking scenes in Thunderbolts. Given the grandeur of an MCU blockbuster, it’s no surprise that special effects play a significant role. A fresh video offers insights into the process by which numerous scenes were brought to fruition.
In an exclusive scoop, ComicBook unveils a visual effects breakdown video featuring Thunderbolts, skillfully crafted by Framestore. The footage starts with an exterior view of CIA Director Valentina Allegra De Fontaine’s covert vault, where the Thunderbolts team initially assembles. Initially tasked to eliminate each other by Valentina, they soon understand their true mission while breaking free from her clutches. The vault’s architectural design atop a mountain, along with the guards armed to neutralize the Thunderbolts, are meticulously created digitally.
In the storyline, we observe that Ghost’s phasing skills originate when she effortlessly passes through the rear of a jeep. Inside the Void, Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, forcefully breaks through a wall and lands on a table in another room, using string wiring to cushion her fall. Several sequences unfold within the Void, with Yelena and Bob being assaulted by objects within Bob’s personal space. A “practical effect merging with CG” is employed to make a curtain suddenly lunge from the wall to strangle both Yelena and Bob.
In the vault, guards start shooting at Bob, causing him to soar skyward with electric wires. He manages to go above the clouds but faints, plummeting back down to earth in a completely computer-generated setting. The story concludes in a digitally created laboratory, which was enlarged and then destroyed during the fight between the Thunderbolts and the Void. Preliminary special effects demonstrate the expansion of the Void lab, as well as its crumbling under the impact of Bob’s attacks on the Void. Yelena manages to free herself from her bindings and races to aid Bob, dodging debris with parkour moves in the wreckage.
In the final act of Thunderbolts*, it was unveiled that the asterisk in the title concealed the team’s real name – The New Avengers. If you were a fan of Thunderbolts*, you’ll be thrilled to find out that the same cast will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, where the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men crew confront Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The closing credits scene from Thunderbolts* sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday, as the New Avengers detect the arrival of the Fantastic Four’s spaceship into our dimension.
*Thunderbolts* can be rented or bought digitally, and you’ll be able to stream it on Disney+ starting around August.
