Thunderbolts Director Finally Addresses That Controversial MCU Death (& Backlash)

In an interview with Variety during the release of Thunderbolts‘ home media version, director Jake Schreier discusses the contentious death of Taskmaster in the movie and the subsequent reaction. He explained that the demise of Taskmaster was a modification made after the 2023 Hollywood strikes, as early drafts of the script were deemed too bloodless for a story about assassins. To add tension and significance to the film, Schreier decided to alter the outcome so that Taskmaster suffered an ignoble fate. Schreier acknowledged it was a challenging choice but commended actor Olga Kurylenko for her performance in the role.

After the strike, during the process of revising the script, Schreier stated this: “What followed was a change in the script’s direction. I acknowledge the discontent expressed by some regarding this shift, and I empathize with their sentiments. This decision wasn’t made lightly. As we delved into reworking the script, it felt somewhat devoid of violence due to its original version. To truly portray these characters as contract killers, showing the consequences of their actions was crucial for the movie’s impact. We explored various options for this depiction.

He went on to say, “Clearly, I believe Olga is an exceptional actress. It’s not easy. It’s simply portraying the fact that these characters live with this as a constant, and they often feel that their lives lack significant worth.

As the anticipation for the release of “Thunderbolts” grew, many Marvel enthusiasts speculated that the character Taskmaster might perish, given his absence from various promotional materials. In the movie, Ghost fires at Taskmaster in the head at the beginning itself, before the rest of the characters understand they had walked into a trap orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Despite “Thunderbolts” receiving generally favorable reviews, Taskmaster’s death drew heavy criticism. Fans felt she deserved a more compassionate ending, particularly considering the harrowing backstory revealed in “Black Widow”.

Back in the heart of May, whispers circulated about my potential return as Taskmaster for the epic showdown in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Recently, I shared a snapshot from Bahrain with the simple caption, “Working on a Sunday.” It’s intriguing to note that this year, filming for “Doomsday” was happening exactly where my photo was taken. Although nothing official has been confirmed about me joining the Avengers cast, it’s worth mentioning that I was the sole main Thunderbolts star absent from the March cast announcement. Marvel’s mastermind, Kevin Feige, hinted at further casting reveals in the future. Here’s to hoping my involvement will be announced soon!

The story of Thunderbolts revolves around a diverse band of individuals, who despite their past mistakes and questionable actions, discover that they have significant roles to play in the grand scheme of things. Initially, one character meets an untimely demise upon their initial encounter, setting the stage for their shared journey. Ghost’s brutal act underscores everyone’s self-interest at the outset. However, as time passes, they learn the importance of unity and teamwork. Although Taskmaster’s death could have been more tactfully executed, the transformation of these characters into the New Avengers provides a gratifying conclusion to the film.

In the storyline of Thunderbolts, Taskmaster’s demise served a vital purpose. It would be great if we could find a way to reintroduce this character at some point. With the multiverse in play, a Taskmaster variant could emerge, adding an exciting twist to Doomsday given that the New Avengers will be significant players. There is a lot of potential for this character that remains unexplored. Her screen time in the MCU was disappointingly limited. If Kurylenko doesn’t fit into Doomsday, then perhaps Taskmaster could reappear after the MCU undergoes its reset following Avengers: Secret Wars. If Feige is willing to recast heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, then correcting past errors with Taskmaster should be straightforward.
