In the lineup of characters for the film “Thunderbolts,” many are familiar from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe productions, but there are also some fresh faces. One of the newcomers is Geraldine Viswanathan, playing Mel Gold. In the Marvel Comics, Mel eventually transforms into the superhero Songbird. Although Songbird didn’t appear in “Thunderbolts,” speculations arose about her potential presence in the movie. However, her role in the MCU moving forward is yet to be determined. Viswanathan, meanwhile, expresses hope that she will have the opportunity to portray Mel’s superhero alter ego at some point.
In an interview with ComicBook, Viswanathan shared her enthusiasm about portraying Songbird in the upcoming Disney+ series Thunderbolts. She believes she could pull off the character’s signature pink and white hair style remarking, “I think I could rock a wig quite well.” Adding that she’s been considering a hair color change for some time, she expressed her eagerness to bring this role to life and see how she would look in the character’s distinctive hairstyle.
Will Songbird Appear in a Future MCU Movie?

The film titled “Thunderbolts” significantly improved Marvel Cinematic Universe’s critical standing, receiving widespread acclaim with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%. This movie was lauded for its heartfelt, character-centric narrative that delved into serious themes like mental health. Marvel was so impressed by the film’s outcome that they hired “Thunderbolts” director Jake Schreier to direct the upcoming X-Men reboot. Despite the positive buzz, “Thunderbolts” underperformed financially, becoming one of the lowest-grossing MCU movies, earning only $382.4 million globally.
Despite the fact that Thunderbolts* achieved success on various home media platforms, its lackluster performance at the box office raised doubts about Marvel’s future direction. As it became apparent that Thunderbolts* would be seen as a flop, reports emerged suggesting that Marvel might reconsider its approach to filmmaking, focusing more on projects featuring top-tier brands and characters like Spider-Man and the Avengers. Additionally, Marvel is exploring methods to reduce production costs, such as casting less established actors for X-Men roles. Some Thunderbolts* characters will appear in the New Avengers lineup in Avengers: Doomsday, although a direct sequel has yet to be confirmed.
It appears that Viswanathan won’t have a chance to perform in Songbird, as she wasn’t included in the Doomsday cast announced this year. There’s still a possibility she might be added later, but at the moment, it seems unlikely she’ll be part of Doomsday given the busy cast and intricate plot involving multiple superhero teams battling Doctor Doom. Introducing a new Thunderbolts character as a hero could disrupt the flow, potentially reducing screen time for established heroes in the film.
The probability of a Thunderbolts sequel hinges on how the characters’ stories unfold within the upcoming Avengers films, and it appears that introducing Songbird into the mix could be ideal for Thunderbolts 2 since it would allow the story to solely revolve around this group of characters. However, given Thunderbolts’ box office performance, the likelihood of a follow-up becoming reality is slim. The Avengers: Secret Wars may pave the way for a new era in the MCU, effectively erasing old stories and setting the stage for fresh adventures. It remains unclear which characters and aspects from the Multiverse Saga will carry over; fans might have to content themselves with the Easter egg of Mel’s bird necklace instead of seeing Songbird take center stage.
