In Netflix’s “The Thursday Murder Club,” the identities of Tony Curran and Ian Ventham’s killers were revealed in the last 20 minutes, surprising many viewers. The heart of the mystery unfolds around the deaths of the co-owners of Coopers Chase, a retirement community where the members of the titular murder club find themselves unexpectedly drawn into investigating a genuine case, starring Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren.
The demise of these two persons is connected to Ventham’s relentless pursuit of selling Coopers Chase to a developer, while Curran resists letting go due to his attachment to the property. This conflict sets the stage for a group of enthusiastic detective-wannabes, driven by their love for unsolved mysteries, to collect and analyze evidence and clues to uncover the true culprit.
According to Richard Osman’s book series titled “The Thursday Murder Club,” the film adaptation of the same name feels like a reunion of famous actors such as Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and Geoff Bell, who are reuniting for this project. The film also features additional stars including Sir Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Tom Ellis, and Richard E. Grant. The movie “The Thursday Murder Club” made its debut on Netflix on August 28, 2025.
Who Killed Tony Curran in Thursday Murder Club?
As a movie reviewer, I’d say: In the gripping final act of “The Thursday Murder Club,” the identity of Tony Curran’s killer was unveiled, and it turns out that the seemingly harmless co-owner of Coopers Chase had been harboring a sinister secret all along. Initially, he appeared to be a champion for his fellow residents, but there was a darker side to him that the movie brilliantly revealed in those final, tense minutes. The twist was as shocking as it was well-executed – a testament to the show’s knack for keeping viewers on their toes until the very end!
In the film, it was uncovered that Tony, contrary to initial assumptions, was not an upright person. He colluded with Bobby Tanner, another business partner, to hire destitute foreigners under deceitful conditions. They offered these individuals passports as a form of bondage, preventing them from leaving the country.
One worker, specifically Bogdan (Henry Lloyd Hughes), was a Polish caretaker at Coopers Chase who desperately yearned to return home to Poland due to his mother’s illness. When he asked Tony for his passport, this request ignited a heated argument between the two, culminating in an unfortunate incident where Bogdan accidentally ended up killing Tony.
In the heart-stopping moment at 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 21 seconds into the movie, as we were engaged in a game of chess, Bogdan revealed his secret to me – his confidant, Stephen. He clarified that the tragedy involving Tony was never premeditated; instead, it was an unintended and unfortunate event.
Stephen, listen carefully. What happened with Tony wasn’t deliberate. I didn’t mean for it to end the way it did. However, I really need my passport back. I hope you understand and trust me on this, Stephen.
As a film enthusiast, I found myself engrossed in a suspenseful tale where Stephen, seemingly affected by dementia, appeared to have forgotten his crucial chess-related confession. However, Elizabeth (Helen Mirren) masterfully unveiled an intriguing detail – Stephen meticulously logs each of his chess sessions. This revelation implied that the recording in question also captured Bogdan’s damning confession. Although it was clear that Stephen didn’t intentionally plan to take Tony’s life, the fact remains that taking a life is still a heinous crime, and the police eventually apprehended him for his actions.
In simpler terms, although Bogdan had the opportunity to harm Stephen and escape, he chose not to. Regrettably, a challenging circumstance drove him to act impulsively.
Ian Ventham’s Killer Is Not Who We Expected
It’s evident that the character portrayed by David Tennant, known for his role in Jessica Jones as Ian Ventham, was determined to bring down Coopers Chase. This relentless pursuit resulted in him making numerous enemies, and there were a multitude of potential culprits who wished him harm.
In those final moments with Ventham, The Thursday Murder Club clarified that Bogdan did not mastermind Ventham’s demise. Instead, an unexpected suspect emerged: John Grey.
Moving forward, the focus has shifted back to the murder club mentioned in the title, as they’ve been working diligently on an old case – the death of Angela Hughes from the 1970s. One of the officers assigned to this case is Penny Grey, who hails from the Kent Police Department and happens to be one of the club’s founders. She has played a crucial role in supplying details about the investigation.
It emerged that Penny stated unequivocally that Angela’s boyfriend, Peter Mercer, had murdered her. However, due to her being a woman, the officers found it hard to believe her account. Consequently, Penny chose to take action and ended up killing Mercer herself. This grim deed was only known by Penny and John.
Upon investigation, Penny revealed that Angela’s boyfriend, Peter Mercer, was indeed the killer. Unfortunately, because she was a woman, her statement wasn’t initially taken seriously by the officers. In response, Penny took it upon herself to bring justice and killed Mercer. She and John were the only ones privy to this shocking act of self-righteousness.
Penny and John hid Mercer’s body on Coopers Chase. If Ian Ventham’s idea for a retirement village went ahead, it could have revealed their secret from decades ago. To safeguard Penny’s reputation and halt the development, John, being a vet, administered a large amount of fentanyl to Ventham, unfortunately causing his demise.
Despite the fact that John carried out his actions out of love for Penny, they were still considered murder. The film concluded with John deciding to take both their lives peacefully rather than serving a prison sentence.
The sad conclusion of the Thursday Murder Club, involving John and Penny, underscores the poignant truth that love and devotion can lead individuals to take drastic steps. Similarly, this sentiment is reflected in Bogdan’s actions, where his desire to help his ailing mother resulted in him unintentionally killing Tony.
