In various UK cinemas now, the movie version of “The Thursday Murder Club,” based on Richard Osman’s work, boasts an impressive cast, with Dame Helen Mirren being one of its most prominent members.
Absolutely, Mirren’s extensive acting career has allowed her to play a wide range of characters, and at one point the latest film cleverly nods to one of her most memorable past performances – her Academy Award-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 biopic “The Queen.
At a certain point, Elizabeth (who’s surprisingly named the same as her character) teams up with fellow Thursday Murder Club member Joyce (played by Celia Imrie), devising a plan that leads them into the police station. Their goal? To have a conversation with PC Donna De Freitas (portrayed by Naomi Ackie).
Upon exiting their home, adorned with a hat and cane, her husband Stephen, played by Jonathan Pryce, let out a surprised chuckle and inquired, “Goodness gracious, what is that outfit of yours?
He then adds: “You look just like the Queen!” to which Elizabeth responds: “Do I?”
Later, Stephen alludes to the Queen’s funeral, referring to it as a mournful occasion, which unexpectedly startles Elizabeth, as she is taken aback that he could recall such an event considering his battles with memory loss due to dementia.
“He confirms, ‘Absolutely!’ The event was on television on September 19th, 2022. Your interest in the security measures was quite noticeable.”

In an intriguingly fitting turn of events, it’s noteworthy that Dame Helen Mirren, who famously portrayed the Queen with her Oscar-winning performance, and Tobias Menzies, who took on the role of Prince Philip in the last seasons of The Crown, have both starred in significant royal roles.
During the movie, fans might be taken back by a role reminiscent of Mirren’s most famous ones. Her tough detective style shares similarities with her iconic character Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect.
