Tifa’s Limit Breaks and Move Set in Street Fighter 6 Explained by Capcom

Street Fighter 6 continues to be popular, and its fourth year will bring new characters and challenges to keep the game fresh. A major highlight is the addition of Tifa from Final Fantasy VII – a crossover that fans of both games, and the development teams themselves, are incredibly excited about.

Square Enix and Capcom have been collaborating for some time to create a crossover event. At Summer Game Fest 2026, Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto, the director and producer of Street Fighter 6, explained how they integrated Tifa into the game and adapted her skills from the RPG series to fit the fighting game’s gameplay.

CB: What kind of move sets can fans expect to see with Tifa?

Takayuki Nakayama explained that Tifa from Final Fantasy VII has a wide range of striking and memorable moves. Her special attacks, known as limit breaks, provided excellent inspiration for the Street Fighter 6 team. They then worked to adapt those ideas to fit the Street Fighter 6 universe. Nakayama also praised Square Enix for their collaborative spirit and willingness to consider their suggestions.

We’re very confident in how we’re portraying Tifa in the game. While we can’t share details just yet because her release is still a ways off, I’m a longtime fan of the series myself. We know what’s possible, and as a fan, I’m really excited about what’s coming for her.

We wanted to honor Tifa’s history from the Final Fantasy series while making sure she felt like a seamless addition to the Street Fighter 6 character lineup. Can you tell us about how you achieved that balance?

Honestly, it’s tough to say exactly how it all came together, but we really wanted to strike the right balance. Thankfully, Square Enix had a clear idea of how Tifa would fit into the Street Fighter 6 universe, and they were generous enough to share tons of design materials and artwork showing what she’d look like. It was super helpful!

We’ve gotten great feedback, and also some helpful suggestions for making things even better. This has been a real team effort. Once she’s officially revealed, we expect a lot of excitement – she has a truly unique style, and there’s no one else quite like her on the team. She’s sure to make a big impression.

We’re continuing our discussion with the team behind Street Fighter 6, covering topics like how long they’ve been planning this collaboration, how they’re making sure new and returning characters play fairly, and what’s next for the game.

How did you all convince Square Enix to lend Tifa for Street Fighter 6?

We’ve had discussions with people at Square Enix for about three years now, exploring potential collaborations. We agreed that if a character from Final Fantasy VII were to appear in Street Fighter, they’d naturally need to be skilled in martial arts.

Tifa joining Street Fighter 6 felt like a natural fit, and something fans have wanted for years. We’d been discussing the possibility with the Street Fighter team since Street Fighter 5, and those conversations, along with a strong working relationship built over the last three years, finally made it happen. It’s been a long time coming!

Can fans expect a good number of costumes for her?

This character is in line with the others we’ve designed, so we anticipate similar performance numbers. Square Enix has been receptive to our ideas and designs, and they’ve given us helpful feedback throughout the process. Creating the cosmetic items has been a really collaborative effort with them.

I’ve been seeing a ton of hype around new characters like Yasmine, which is awesome! I’m really curious though – what’s the thinking behind bringing in these fresh characters instead of just giving us more content with the ones we already love? What are you hoping to achieve by expanding the roster this way?

We’re excited to see so many new players joining Street Fighter 6, including people from all over the world. We believe adding new characters like Yasmine, who has Filipino heritage, will appeal to an even broader audience, especially within the SF6 community, as many fans also share Filipino roots.

We believe characters like Yasmin and Arjun will be especially popular with players in Southeast Asia and India, where the gaming community is rapidly expanding. It’s been a while since we added a new character – A.K.I. was introduced in Year 1 – and we felt the time was right to freshen things up with some new faces.

With Tifa Lockhart joining Street Fighter 6, we can expect a surge of new players. How can the developers keep those players engaged and playing the game long-term?

We expect a lot of players will be eager to try out Street Fighter 6 when Tifa is released, but that’s typical with every new character we add. Whenever we introduce someone new, players get excited and want to give them a try.

Often, players who initially try the game because of a character like Tifa end up enjoying others too. We strive to make all our characters engaging and fun to play. While we expect a lot of people will start with Tifa, we also believe this will encourage them to explore the rest of the roster and discover new favorites.

What else can fans expect to see of Street Fighter 6 going forward?

We’re committed to continually expanding and supporting Street Fighter 6 for the long term. That’s why we’re adding new characters, including guests and collaborations, and introducing fresh challenges – all to keep players engaged and excited about the game.

We’re optimistic about the future, especially as we begin year four, but there’s still plenty to accomplish. We successfully surpassed 7,000 registrations for EVO Japan, and we’re setting our sights on reaching 10,000. The future of Street Fighter 6 looks promising, and we’re committed to ongoing development and improvement, both within the game and in the wider community. Year four is just beginning, and we know there’s more work ahead of us.

Street Fighter 6 is out now for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
