Tim Allen Just Explained What’s Stopping the Home Improvement Reboot From Happening

Tim Allen will be reprising his role as Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming Toy Story 5, much to the delight of fans eager to see Woody and Buzz’s next adventure. While many also hope to see a revival of his hit show Home Improvement, Allen recently explained what’s preventing a reboot from moving forward.

Tim Allen recently told US Magazine that a potential reboot of Home Improvement is hitting some snags. While discussions about continuing the show are ongoing, Allen explained that disagreements between the former child stars are creating problems. He suggested a storyline focusing on their adult lives could be interesting, but admitted getting everyone on the same page is proving difficult.

What Is Happening With The Home Improvement Cast

Though Allen, Patricia Richardson, and Richard Karn have all continued acting in different roles, the actors who played their sons have had varied careers. Zachery Ty Bryan (Brad), Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy), and Taran Noah Smith (Mark) haven’t been in many projects over the last ten years, and each has their own reasons for that.

Zachery Ty Bryan faced legal trouble starting last year with an arrest for domestic violence, and prior to that, he was also arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, assault, and robbery. This year, he received a 16-month jail sentence related to his 2024 DUI arrest.

Richardson addressed the possibility of a reboot in an interview with the Back to the Best podcast, where she revealed Allen hadn’t spoken to Richardson or Thomas before making the initial comments about the reboot. That’s where Richardson also addressed the status of the other actors, and it doesn’t seem like a reboot is happening anytime soon.

“He never asked me and he never asked [on-screen son] Jonathan [Taylor Thomas], who I talk to,” Richardson said. “I called Jonathan one day, I said, ‘Has he asked you about this?’ And he went, ‘No, why is he going around telling everybody that we’re all on board when he hasn’t talked to you or me. I think that’s weird.’”

Richardson explained that Zachery Ty Bryan now has a felony conviction. Taran Noah Smith stopped acting after leaving the show and no longer works as an actor. Jonathan isn’t pursuing acting either, preferring to focus on directing and writing. Sadly, Wilson is no longer with us.

It seems these are probably the problems Allen mentioned. Because of them, a reboot might be delayed, or may not happen at all.
