Tim Allen will always have a friend in Tom Hanks.
The actor who voices a character in Toy Story described his 30-year friendship with his fellow actor as warm and playful, but shared that their text messages are quite different from how they act when they’re together.
Allen emphasized his sincerity while speaking with TopMob News at the Los Angeles premiere of Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 on June 9th. The film officially releases on June 19th. He recounted a simple exchange: ‘He asked if I wanted to have lunch. I said, ‘Yes, on Friday.’
Despite his straightforward text messages with Tom Hanks, the 72-year-old—who has two daughters, 36-year-old Katherine Allen with his former partner Laura Deibel, and 17-year-old Elizabeth Allen-Dick with his wife Jane Hajduk—insisted that they have a different dynamic in person. He says they aren’t really as reserved as their texts suggest.
They really let loose and have a lot of fun when they’re together, particularly during their lunch breaks.
Allen, who is 72, jokingly compared their relationship to that of two older women. They enjoy exchanging small gifts with each other – a tradition they’ve kept up for years. He appreciates classic typewriters, while she prefers modern technology.
For the Home Improvement alum, his bond with Hanks—dad to kids Colin Hanks, 48, and Elizabeth Ann Hanks, 44, with ex Samantha Lewes, as well as Chet Hanks, 35, and Truman Hanks, 30, with wife Rita Wilson—is anything but a snake in his boot.
It’s so strange, honestly. Allen tries to explain it, but it’s like having a doppelganger – a twin of the mind, almost. The weirdest part is that we’ll often have the exact same thought at the same time, like suddenly both wondering when lunch is! It’s silly, we basically act like little kids sometimes.
“He’s got grandchildren and a big family,” he continued. “I’ve got two daughters and a beautiful wife and then you’re talking about your family. I can’t describe what 30 years have done. This is what we’ve done and now we’ve become these two guys.”
Allen confessed he still finds it hard to believe how much time has passed and how he and Hanks have both changed over the last thirty years.
He teased, “This is kind of creepy.”
After working with Tom Hanks on the 1995 film Toy Story, Allen has always made an effort to nurture their lovely friendship.
Allen shared on The Kelly Clarkson Show in November 2022 that he’s never felt more trust with another person than he does with Tom. He feels that trust is mutual. Even though they often disagree, Allen appreciates that Tom is a kind and interesting person, and importantly, someone who truly listens without being critical.
