Recently, Tim Russ achieved something no other actor from Star Trek has done in the past two years. Best known for his seven-season role as Lieutenant Commander Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager (which aired on UPN from 1995 to 2001), Russ appeared in both Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Khan.
Tuvok broke ground as the first Vulcan character to be a main cast member on a Star Trek television series since Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) appeared in the original Star Trek. While Spock had human ancestry, Tuvok was a pure Vulcan, but he quickly became a beloved character on Star Trek: Voyager.
Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Voyager, Tim Russ continued to portray Tuvok in fan-created projects, including Star Trek: Renegades. He officially reprised the role within the Star Trek universe with a guest appearance in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. Russ also appears as Ensign Tuvok in Star Trek: Khan, adding to his legacy in the franchise.
Tim Russ Did What No Other Star Trek Actor Has In 2 Years
As a huge Trek fan, I’m really excited about this! Tim Russ is making history – he’s the first actor to play the same character, Tuvok, in both Picard Season 3 and the upcoming Khan movie, and all within just two years! Plus, we’re getting an evil version of Tuvok too, which is just awesome!
Wow, the finale of Star Trek: Picard season 3 really delivered some emotional moments! One scene that particularly got to me was between Tuvok and Seven of Nine. Tuvok revealed that the late Captain Shaw secretly admired Seven and had actually recommended her for a promotion. It was incredibly moving to then see Tuvok get to officially promote her – making her the new Captain of the USS Enterprise-G! A fantastic full-circle moment for a character we’ve all grown to love.
In the seventh episode of Star Trek: Picard season 3, titled “Dominion,” Tim Russ unexpectedly returned as Captain Tuvok, shocking both fans and the character Seven of Nine. However, it was revealed that this Tuvok was actually a Changeling in disguise. Viewers weren’t sure if the real Tuvok was still alive until he appeared again in the season 3 finale, allowing Tim Russ to play a villainous version of the character.
Tim Russ first voiced the character of Ensign Tuvok in Star Trek: Khan. As shown in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Flashback,” Tuvok served alongside Captain Hikaru Sulu (played by George Takei) on the USS Excelsior in the late 23rd century.
Tuvok was instrumental in helping Dr. Rosalind Lear (Sonya Cassidy) investigate Khan Noonien Singh (Naveen Andrews). As expected, he figured out Lear’s secret by the end of Star Trek: Khan.
Tim Russ Is Now Star Trek’s Most Senior Vulcan
After Leonard Nimoy’s death in 2015, Tim Russ became the most experienced actor portraying a Vulcan in the Star Trek universe. As Star Trek: Voyager approaches its 30th anniversary in 2025, Russ has played Tuvok for thirty years, and fans hope he’ll continue in the role for many years to come.
Tuvok, as portrayed by Tim Russ in Star Trek: Voyager, offered a fresh take on Vulcans. Unlike Spock, Tuvok wasn’t burdened by an internal struggle between his Vulcan logic and human emotions, allowing the writers to explore different facets of his character.
Tuvok’s popularity paved the way for Jolene Blalock’s character, Subcommander T’Pol, on Star Trek: Enterprise. He also served as an inspiration for the portrayals of Spock by Zachary Quinto in the Star Trek movies directed by J.J. Abrams, and by Ethan Peck in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Tim Russ has had an incredible run recently, playing the beloved Vulcan character Tuvok in both Star Trek: Picard (including a memorable portrayal of an evil Changeling version) and Star Trek: Khan. It’s unlikely any other actor in the Star Trek universe will achieve the same level of consistent and iconic portrayal of a single character.
