Marvel is exploring a new side of the X-Men’s Psylocke with a five-issue comic series called Psylocke: Ninja. Launching in January, the series will show how Betsy Braddock became a skilled assassin and introduce her first meeting with Elektra. Written by Tim Seeley and illustrated by Nico Leon, this series promises to be a highlight of Marvel’s upcoming releases, and ComicBook has an exclusive preview of the first issue, which Seeley describes as a story centered around revenge.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, writer Tom Seeley discussed Betsy Braddock’s current storyline, which involves a surprising body swap. He explained that the story will deeply explore Betsy’s emotional and physical struggles, and will also blend different genres in a way that promises a fresh and exciting experience for X-Men readers.
Psylocke: Ninja Is Bigger Than Just an X-Men Story

You’ve worked on the X-Men quite a bit. What do you find particularly appealing about the ‘Psylocke: Ninja’ project?
With Ninja, I was able to build on an approach I developed with Rogue: The Savage Land: revisiting classic 80s and 90s comics and finding opportunities to add new stories that fit within the existing continuity. Savage Land was intentionally focused and self-contained, but Ninja allowed me to draw from a much wider range of titles, including Uncanny X-Men, Daredevil, Wolverine, and even New Warriors! This story is very meaningful for Betsy, and it’s also a passion project for me – a chance to combine and reimagine comics I love into something fresh.
The X-Men have a rich and well-known past. What was the most difficult part of exploring this specific period in Psylocke’s story?
The story of Betsy Braddock becoming the ninja Psylocke is pretty complicated, with some parts that don’t quite match up. To write it, I really focused on the core idea: Betsy being fundamentally changed into someone else, and ultimately embracing that new identity. It was important to me that she felt in control of her own choices, even within a wild, sci-fi story about body swaps and mind control. Balancing those elements took a lot of thought.
What has been your favorite thing about Psylocke: Ninja?
Ultimately, it’s a thrilling revenge story unfolding in the city of Madripoor. The setting gave me a chance to blend genres I love – think cyberpunk, stylish action inspired by pinky violence films, and incredible martial arts – into something fresh and exciting!
What’s one unexpected twist readers might find in this book, and what was the biggest surprise for you while writing it?
I’m really pleased with how I was able to weave together the stories from Uncanny X-Men, Elektra: Assassin, Daredevil: Fall From Grace, and the Night Thrasher solo series into one connected story. I hope readers will be surprised and enjoy how it all comes together!
