Time Is Running out to Stream One of the Best Sci-Fi Sequels of the 2020s to Date

It’s unusual for a remake or revival to be better than what came before, but science fiction seems to pull it off more often than other genres. We’ve seen successful reinventions with films like Dune, The Thing, The Invisible Man, and The Fly – newer versions that actually improve upon the originals. However, it’s even rarer for a reboot to not only be better but to revitalize an entire film series, and that’s exactly what happened with the Planet of the Apes reboot. While each film in the new series has been strong, viewers on HBO Max are soon going to lose access to another one.

The movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be leaving HBO Max on January 31st. This follows the removal of Rise of the Planet of the Apes last month and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes two months ago. Luckily, you still have just over a week to watch it, so now’s the time to stream or rewatch the film!

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Is Outstanding Entry in the Apes Franchise (And We’re Still Waiting For a Sequel)

Released in 2024, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the latest installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series. It’s a direct sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes, but takes place many years later. The story follows Noa, a young chimpanzee, and Mae, a human woman, as they embark on a journey that could decide the future of both apes and humans.

Though perhaps not as strong as earlier films in the series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is still a worthwhile addition. The story jumps forward 300 years, offering a fresh and intriguing perspective. The film features stunning visual effects, especially in its depiction of the apes, creating a remarkably realistic world. Strong performances and exciting action sequences make it an enjoyable experience, and the ending clearly sets the stage for future installments. Director Wes Ball has confirmed that this film is intended as the beginning of a new Planet of the Apes trilogy, and a sequel is already planned for release in 2027.

Even though Kingdom is leaving HBO Max, there’s some good news for fans. While it’s not yet known where you’ll be able to stream Kingdom next, the first two movies in the reboot series – Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – are now available on Hulu.
