Tom Cruise is a huge star, and rightfully so, having starred in many blockbuster films. While the Mission: Impossible series is his most famous work, he’s also made significant contributions to science fiction. Many fans love 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and are hoping for a follow-up, but another one of his sci-fi movies, often overlooked, showcases a truly excellent performance and may soon be unavailable for streaming.
Released in 2013 and directed by Joseph Kosinski (known later for Top Gun: Maverick), Oblivion wasn’t a critical favorite, but it did well in theaters. Tom Cruise stars as Jack Harper, a technician stationed on a desolate, war-torn Earth. He’s nearing the end of his assignment and is set to join other survivors at a new colony in just two weeks. But when he rescues a mysterious woman from a crashed ship, he begins to doubt everything he knows and uncovers the real story behind the war. Oblivion is leaving Netflix soon, at the end of the month.
Oblivion Is As Much a Love Story As It Is A Sci-Fi Story
Though Oblivion is set in a futuristic, post-war world with a desolate Earth, at its heart it’s a love story. When Jack meets Julia, the pilot of a crashed aircraft, he begins to understand himself better and is forced to choose between his mission and his growing connection with her – a woman who feels strangely familiar. The film also reveals surprising truths about the war with the aliens and Jack’s own hidden past and purpose.
Critics weren’t overly impressed with the film, finding the script somewhat weak. However, Cruise’s performance as Jack received widespread acclaim, and deservedly so. It’s one of his most relatable roles, especially considering his action-packed work in films like Mission: Impossible, offering a refreshing change of pace. The movie is also visually stunning, creating a beautiful and surprisingly atmospheric experience. While Oblivion doesn’t quite reach the heights of Edge of Tomorrow, which came out the next year, it’s still a standout film in Cruise’s career and a sci-fi movie worth watching.
