A popular movie from A24 is leaving Tubi. The acclaimed romantic thriller was only available on the free streaming service for a short time, but will soon be removed.
It’s not yet known exactly when, but Kristen Stewart’s film Love Lies Bleeding will soon be removed from Tubi. It’s leaving alongside other popular movies like Mulholland Drive and Across the Universe. The film was added to Tubi on January 1st and will be gone about a month later.
This film, set in New Mexico in the late 1980s, tells the story of Lou, a gym manager, and Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder, and their intense relationship. Their lives become complicated when they get caught up in the dangerous world of Lou’s father, who deals in weapons and has been distant from his son.
Rose Glass, the director of Saint Maud, returns with her second film, Love Lies Bleeding. The movie stars Kristen Stewart as Lou and Katy O’Brian of The Mandalorian as Jackie, alongside a strong supporting cast featuring Ed Harris, Dave Franco, and Anna Baryshnikov (known for Dickinson).
Despite a disappointing $12.8 million box office run, the film Love Lies Bleeding gained attention and even earned praise from Justice League director Zack Snyder. He called it “great” and shared with The Hollywood Handle that he “really loved” the A24 movie when discussing his favorite films of the year that August.
While Zack Snyder’s support is a boost, it’s not the only reason Love Lies Bleeding is getting attention. The film has a strong audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 81% of viewers liking it. Critics are even more enthusiastic, giving it a 94% rating. Reviewers particularly praised the film’s dramatic style, its dreamlike quality, and the performances of Kristen Stewart and Jena Malone.
Love Lies Bleeding Held A Special Meaning to Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart, who identifies as openly gay, enjoyed playing the lead role of Lou in the new lesbian suspense romance. She told Rolling Stone that it was liberating to portray a character who typically isn’t the focus of a film – a younger, unconventional protagonist. She described the experience as ‘really fing fun’.
Taking on the role of Lou allowed Stewart to reconnect with a freer part of herself, reminding her of how she expressed herself as a young actor before Hollywood imposed strict standards on women. She described it as a surprisingly emotional return to form, and praised the film Love Lies Bleeding for its open portrayal of queerness. She explained that it felt like revisiting who you are at eleven years old – the way you look and dress – before societal pressures dictate how you should be.
You can currently watch Love Lies Bleeding on Tubi, or rent or buy it from platforms like YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and iTunes.
