As a huge TMNT fan, I’ve seen them team up with everyone from the Power Rangers to Batman and even Naruto! Godzilla felt like the next logical step, and honestly, it totally works! IDW Publishing just released the first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla, and it’s a blast. If you’re a fan of either franchise, or both, you absolutely need to check it out – it’s seriously entertaining!
What immediately stands out about this crossover is how naturally the worlds of the two franchises blend together, thanks to writer Tim Seeley. He quickly sets up a premise that feels like a seamless addition to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ existing history, rather than a forced rewrite. Within just a couple of pages, he establishes a solid foundation for the entire story, and the speed at which he does so is really remarkable.
Rating: 4 out of 5
| PROS | CONS |
| Turtles Pop With Personality | After Fast Start, Slows Down Considerably |
| Godzilla Is Epic In Every Way | Backgrounds Lack Detail And Punch Compared To Characters |
| Fits Into TMNT Lore Seamlessly |
The story then jumps to the present day, continuing the main plot. The artwork by Fero Pe and Luis Antonio Delgado expertly connects the past and present timelines. Their illustrations of Godzilla and the other monsters are excellent, and the massive scale of Godzilla is powerfully conveyed through stunning, full-page artwork. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are also well-drawn, with each Turtle’s distinct personality clearly coming across as the action picks up.

Although we don’t see the Turtles battle Godzilla yet, the action scenes are vibrant and energetic, and New York City looks fantastic when featured. The characters, especially the Turtles, Splinter, and Krang, are incredibly expressive and well-developed. Shredder consistently looks awesome, while Krang’s wild appearance complements him perfectly, making their relationship interesting.
The premise of giant monsters and mutant turtles is already exciting enough, but it’s great to see characters from other franchises join the story – especially for longtime Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans. As the series progresses, Godzilla fans will have more to look forward to, though this particular issue focuses more on the Turtles, who serve as the stable center amidst all the chaos. It sounds strange to say that mutant turtles are the ‘grounded’ option, but when dealing with ancient monsters, they actually are!

Both fans of these series should enjoy this issue, though it isn’t perfect. The characters are well-drawn and show emotion, but some backgrounds are simple and lack detail, especially in scenes with the Turtles. The story also slows down a bit in the middle. While this section is entertaining, it doesn’t have the same fast pace as the beginning or the exciting cliffhanger that sets up the next issue’s big fight.
Despite a few weaknesses, the story remains enjoyable, and fans of both series will likely have fun seeing these popular characters interact. I’m excited to see where the story goes next.
