Matt Berry doesn’t think there will be another season of his popular comedy show, Toast of London.
The show centers on Steven Toast, a distant and somewhat eccentric actor, as he struggles through the bizarre world of London’s entertainment industry. He takes on uninspiring voiceover work and constantly clashes with his longtime enemy, Ray Purchase.
Toast of London first aired on Channel 4 in October 2013, just a month after the last episode of The IT Crowd, which also featured actor Matt Berry. This made it an easy and appealing show for fans who enjoyed the quirky comedy of The IT Crowd.
The show initially ended after three seasons, but unexpectedly found new popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. It returned with audio skits created during lockdown, which led to a complete reboot as ‘Toast of Tinseltown’.

The movie, filmed in Hollywood, featured a lot of familiar faces thanks to Berry’s connections in the American entertainment industry. Stars like Rashida Jones, Larry David, Paul Rudd, and even a cameo from the voice of Homer Simpson all made appearances.
Berry shared his ideas about bringing back the character, following the news that Toast of London was nominated in our poll to find the best British comedy (you can vote until March 24th).
He pointed out a key benefit was being closer in age to his character, Steven Toast. ‘Toast was always supposed to be in his late 40s,’ he said, ‘and I was around 30 when I first started playing him.’
Things at work have been unexpectedly hectic lately, which I’m grateful for, but it’s left me with no time to revisit that character I was working on.
Kayvan Novak is known for his work on the popular vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows, which ran for six seasons and received critical acclaim. He’s also appeared in several other well-known projects, including Netflix’s Disenchantment, Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett, Dreamworks’ The Wild Robot, and the Prime Video series Fallout.
In the show Toast of London, Berry questioned if certain trends or ideas were better left in the past, specifically wondering if they were simply products of their time – around 2010 – and shouldn’t be revisited.
He explained that it was too risky. If it failed, it could undo all the progress they’d already made, and that failure would be the final blow.

Berry didn’t completely dismiss the possibility of more Toast, but strongly suggested it was likely over, stating he was ’90 percent’ sure it had run its course.
He explained that he never looks back at his past work with fondness, and wouldn’t revisit it simply for nostalgic reasons. He’s always focused on new projects, and believes his collaborator, Arthur Mathews, feels the same way. They’d only consider revisiting something if they had a truly compelling new concept.
Next up for Halle Berry is the comedic detective series Force & Majeure, alongside Natasha Lyonne from Poker Face. She also lends her voice to the animated film The Cat in the Hat and will appear in the Rogue Trooper movie based on the 2000AD comic book.
