Tomorrow, April 18, is when Token2049, the yearly Web3 conference, will begin. However, attendees may face unexpected obstacles at the entrance as torrential rains have hit the desert city in the past few days, causing extensive flooding.
In a normal year, this city receives only 9.5 cm (4 inches) of rain. Yet, over the course of 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday evening, an unexpected 15 cm (6 inches) of rain fell, turning the dry metropolis upside down.
Social media is filled with videos and snippets showing unexpected scenes, as streets transform into rivers, cars get swept away, airplanes spray water on inundated runways, and stories about rerouted flights and conference attendees stranded in their hotels.
This morning, the second busiest airport in the world, located in the city and handling approximately 87 million passengers annually, made an unprecedented announcement to stay away from travelers – a first for the desert country.
Despite the challenges faced by visitors, the scheduled event will proceed as planned. Fingers crossed that typical Emirati weather with clear skies and 30-degree temperatures returns soon, revitalizing the city once more.

The two-day TOKEN2049 conference will be held from April 18-19, 2024, at the Madinat Jumeirah Hotel in Dubai. Known as one of the most significant Web3 and crypto community gatherings annually, this will be the inaugural time for the event to take place in Dubai.
The tickets for this event were quickly snapped up beforehand, with an estimated crowd of 10,000 people attending over the course of two days. This gathering will feature founders, executives, and key decision-makers from over 4,000 businesses spanning across more than 100 countries.
At this event in Dubai, you’ll find a varied schedule brimming with topics such as decentralized AI, Web3 gaming, DeFi, and blockchain scalability. In true Dubai style, the program will be enriched with exhibitions, pulsating live DJ music, and luxurious hospitality.
The first leg of TOKEN2049 took place from April 15th to 21st, featuring a week-long lineup of gatherings, learning sessions, and social events. The subsequent TOKEN2049 installment is scheduled for Singapore in September.
