Tom Brady Reveals His Dog Junie Is a Clone of His Late Dog Lua

Tom Brady‘s family game plan will have you seeing double.

It still feels a little surreal, but I was so moved to hear that after losing his sweet dog Lua almost two years ago, the former NFL quarterback welcomed a new pup named Junie. And the amazing part? Junie is a clone of Lua! It’s incredible what Colossal Biosciences was able to do, and it clearly means the world to him to have a piece of his best friend back.

Tom recently revealed in a statement to People how much he loves his pets, saying they’re incredibly important to his whole family. He explained that a few years ago, he worked with the company Colossal to clone their aging dog using a simple blood sample taken before she died.

The company, also announcing it had bought ViaGen Pets and Equine, helped the family of the 48-year-old—as Tom explained—get a clone of their cherished dog, giving them “a second chance” with a beloved pet.

Tom, who adopted Lua with his former wife Gisele Bündchen in 2014, expressed his enthusiasm for how the combined technology of Colossal and Viagen can both comfort families grieving the loss of a pet and contribute to the preservation of endangered species.

Colossal is now working on innovative projects for pets, but they first gained attention for their attempt to bring back the extinct dire wolf, famously seen in Game of Thrones.

In April, Colossal announced they had achieved a groundbreaking feat: bringing a species back from extinction. The company, known for its work to revive the dodo, woolly mammoth, and other extinct animals, described it as successfully increasing a species’ population from zero – something never before accomplished through science, technology, and conservation efforts.

Since 2016, Viagen has specialized in pet cloning, with notable successes including cloning Barbra Streisand’s dog, Samantha, a Coton du Tulear, in 2017, and Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua, Diamond Baby, in 2022.

Paris Hilton shared that after her dog went missing, she discovered she had previously cloned him, resulting in two identical pups named Diamond and Baby. Her husband, Carter Reum, had suggested the cloning process.

She shared on her show, Paris in Love, that she felt a deep loss without her friend. Describing her as a sister, best friend, and constant companion, she expressed immense relief and gratitude that Carter helped bring them back together.

Barbra chose to get two puppies, and her reason was simple: no dog could ever measure up to her beloved Samantha.

She wrote in a 2018 essay for the New York Times that she was heartbroken when her beloved Samantha died after 14 years, and she simply wanted to find a way to hold onto her memory.

Barbra Streisand loves her dogs, Fanny and Scarlett, even though she knows they aren’t quite like her famous character, Samantha. She appreciates having them in her life.

While you can create a physical copy of a dog, you can’t replicate its unique personality,” she said. “Even so, whenever I see them, I’m reminded of my Samantha…and it makes me happy.”
