Tom Cruise is famous for blockbuster franchises like Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, but a true crime film he made eight years ago is now gaining popularity on streaming services. When American Made was released in 2017, it earned $134 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
The movie American Made, based on the true story of pilot Barry Seal who became a drug smuggler and DEA informant, is currently the most popular film on Paramount+. As of November 19th, FlixPatrol reports it’s number one in the U.S., beating out films like Fatman, Step Brothers, The Naked Gun, and Top Gun: Maverick to claim the top spot. American Made started streaming on November 11th and quickly became the most-watched movie on the platform.
Tom Cruise stars in American Made as Barry Seal, alongside Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, and Jesse Plemons. The film follows Barry as he goes from providing information about communist activity in Central America to running a major secret operation for the CIA. American Made is popular with both critics and audiences, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating of 85
What’s Next for Tom Cruise?
Cruise is currently developing a new installment in the Top Gun franchise. Director Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick, shared some initial details about the project this summer. In June, he hinted at what fans can expect from the next film, which will again star Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
I was so excited to hear Kosinski talk about a potential Top Gun 3! Apparently, he’s been working on a really big idea for almost a year, collaborating with people at the Navy and Lockheed Martin. He mentioned Ehren Kruger, who helped write Maverick, is on board now, which is awesome. He feels like there’s still more to explore with the story, and he’s looking for a challenge that really grabs you and doesn’t let go. He thinks the idea is super ambitious, and honestly, that’s what has me hyped!
Despite being released three years ago, Top Gun: Maverick remains incredibly popular with audiences and is currently the fifth most-streamed movie on Paramount+. Tom Cruise has confirmed he’s exploring a third Top Gun film. In a recent interview on Australia’s Today show, Cruise explained they are considering several story ideas. He also mentioned it took 35 years to make Top Gun: Maverick, and he’s also in discussions about potential sequels to Days of Thunder alongside another Top Gun movie.
American Made is streaming on Paramount+.
